Having briefly met Greta Christina, who has been vocal about this, I wouldn't be too surprised if there isn't one in the early planning stages. She seems likely to eventually say "Fuck it, I'm doing my own thing, cool people with me, lets go!" I think it's needed and would absolutely support a Women's Atheist Conference.

I've always found it cool Folsom Street Fair (Kink and Leather event in SF) has an enclosed Women's only area, not just because the fair is heavily male-gay leaning but to provide a safe space from random creepy guys.

DJ Grothe garnered a well-earned reputation based on his Point of Inquiry podcast and his work at CFI (campus outreach, IIRC). I have to wonder how much being a public dick is a consequence of his unenviable job at JREF and how much is his real personality coming out.

The accusations against Krauss really bum me out, because I had just recently started following him, after he walked out of an enforced gender segregated event.

Yeah, I am p. confused as to how so many people actually seem to think that there's some big defamation case here. Have they never seen a news story in which an unnamed source makes an allegation, and the news outlet reports it as such?

At first, I thought maybe they were all British or something, but nope.

Unless they have a genuine suspicion that PZ is making it all up, or that he somehow knows it's false, I'm honestly confused as to what they think they're going to base this giant defamation case on. He should countersue them for defamation for calling him a defamer.

Well, he hasn't improved on this issue in the last year....an unwillingness to learn is certainly suspected. I doubt these attitudes and stances regarding women are some official talking point of the JREF. So, I want to say it's his personality.

I've been... out of the loop for awhile, and today is the first day in awhile I checked either here or FTB.

It's no surprise to me at all that it's Shermer being accused now. He's the guy whose name wasn't being named when there was that remark last year about an informal network of women warning each other about "certain male speakers." Or at least, one of them.

Back then, it was consensus on FTB not to publicly name names about this (I'm not sure what changed since then), and you wouldn't be able to find any comments there outing him. But some commenters at Friendly Atheist had no such qualms. I guess it's basically been an open secret all along.

Also, and at risk of strawmanning his actual views as I can't be fucked to read anything he writes, obligatory remark about the lolbert who plans to run crying to the government when people say mean things about him.

Basically, Dave W[h]iner finally weighed in on why he thinks there are so few women programmers, and he concluded mostly that ladies aren't good at it because of some evolutionary biology that he made up about hunting.

Multiple people lolled at him, and then he was all like, NOT MY FAULT, and also MISANDRY! because people called him a mansplainer and he made up a definition of mansplaining that means that ladies do it to him. Because if you tell a man to stop being sexist, you become an automatically worse sexist because of some kind of brohammer math.

And of course, you see stuff like this and can just be like, "Yeah, that asshole Dave Winer is always saying stupid stuff" and pretend it doesn't matter, but something is doing this. I mean, I'm not a big fan of programming, but working in tech, anyway, is a pretty sweet gig compared to the other options out there, and women would not be leaving the field in such numbers if there weren't really serious problems in the industries.
