If you find yourself east of LaGuardia for any reason, Fort Totten Park is awesome. Lots of urban decay and old bomb shelters!

Re: What's up with you?
Doesn't look like we will be leaving Manhattan. We only have 4 full days, 2 of them will probably be taken up pretty much entirely with Natural History and MoMA, so had to really pare it down to the big tourist attractions.
I wish I had much more time and money in general, our trip to the UK was also a highlights only, and I would love to get to some more off the beaten paths.

She doesn't like having her picture taken and turns her head all rude like that...not sure why unless I have inadvertently blinded her with the flash at some point.

Re: What's up with you?
I bought a new car two days ago. Not new to me, brand new. I can't remember the last time I bought a vehicle with a pre-teen odometer reading. And this after saying I would never do that. IT WAS ON SALE, OKAY?!
2014 Nissan Maxima, all the bells and whistles my 2007 Maxima has, plus a few more. Now I'm trying to sell the old one; any takers?

I need a new-to-me car, but I don't have the cash right now, not even for a high-mileage beater. But I can pay you in broken Monster High dolls and snickerdoodles. Who could pass that up?

My first Marginalia Book Club book was returned today.
Without a single thing written in the margins.

Maybe you need to write a few things in to prime the pumps. Like putting a few bucks in the empty tip jar.

Re: What's up with you?
I was working on a copy of Jane Eyre that was donated with margin notes, but it seemed at first like people were getting the point without it and I got sick of reading it. I suppose I should put it out after all.

So, what you are saying is that thus far the project has not been even marginally successful.

Got me a helmet-mountable video camera. Now I just need a bike jersey that says "You're on camera".

Re: What's up with you?
My back door has fallen off. Literally, fallen from a vertical position on its sliding runners to a horizontal position on the paving. Amazingly, the glass didn't break.
It's only been 2.5 months since I reported problems with it so I probably shouldn't complain. But I do feel as though I am in a reality show about the horrors of renting.

I've had ongoing issues with roots in the sewer for I think 2.5 years. At the moment I've been keeping everything flowing using a gallon of industrial strength drain cleaner a week.

Re: What's up with you?
Rock salt down the drain will work too--to kill the trees.

Re: What's up with you?
I don't want to kill the trees, the shade is too nice. Though it's entirely possible the big trees aren't the ones that sent these roots. The part of the line near them was replaced last fall. This is right next to the house. A sapling had grown up next to the walk that I didn't do anything about until it got to maybe 4' tall. Then finally it dawned it on me that leaving it wasn't such a good idea. I took a hacksaw to it last month. But even if the roots are from that, it would probably take a good long time before they rot.

Re: What's up with you?
Actually, I don't think salting the drain pipes is advisable until after you've had the rooter guys clear it. And it won't really kill healthy trees, they'll just grow their roots away from it. Copper sulfate works too.

Re: What's up with you?
My sewer gets blocked every couple of years, or so. The last bit of it leading to the main pipe under the street is consists of 1.2 metre long terracotta pipes. The roots from the bottlebrush tree get in at the joins. Every time I get the plumber onto it with the electric eel, it costs 180 dollars. Eventually, I'll get a seven metre section replaced with PVC piping, but that is a lot more expensive. The drain lies more than a metre below the surface. The dirt over the top is fairly solid sandy clay and the area is inaccessible to a mechanical digger.
Here is why I prefer to shell out the money for unblocking the drain to cutting the venerable, old tree down.
