The Pabst Brewing Company, makers of the hipster fave Pabst Blue Ribbon beer and other marques such as Colt 45, Old Milwaukee, Schlitz, Lone Star, Ranier, and Old Style, has been sold to a Russian company, Oasis Beverages. This means virtually all of the domestic beer in America is now foreign beer. Will it taste better if we call it an import?

It's EVERYWHERE on Capitol Hill, in Seattle. Except that it's referred to as "PeeBeeAR" (PBR).

I think fedoras are the domain of MRAs, rather than hipsters.

I was at a bar in Vegas (quite possibly the diviest dive bar in Clark County) that advertised those beers, and a few others, as "Shit Beer Wednesday." Stuff people with functional tastebuds avoid.

edit: Actually, worst beer I've tasted is probably Bud Light Lime. Then Bud/Bud Light came out with a clamato beer.

My grandfather owned a Pabst distributorship. Bought into it as a silent partner, wound up running it when two of the other three partners died and the third couldn't take the job. I've never tasted the stuff. My dad never liked beer, probably because he spent his adolescence working on the beer trucks.

PBR tastes just like Budweiser to me. It's to be expected, virtually all large commercial producers of lagers are using the same time-tested recipe. But, the reason most of the people I see at the dive bar I sometimes frequent (ironic, I know), buy PBR for two reasons, one, it's "high point" beer, not 3.2%, and two, it's cheap, the same price for a 16 ounce can as other domestic 3.2% beers in 12 ounce cans or bottles.

That said I drink Miller Lite, because I'm a supertaster on bitter things. Miller, either Lite or "the champagne of beers" Miller High Life, are malty-tasting sweet beers with very little bitter hoppy taste.

Miller Lite won the gold medal for Best American-style Lager at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. There were 32 entrants in that category. Miller Lite won gold in this same category at the GABF in 2010 as well, and silver in 2003 and 2012.

So, up your nose with a rubber hose and in your ear with a can of beer, beer snobs.

I'm not really a beer drinker, but I can say that I recently quaffed a draft at Kloster Weltenburg, hard by the Donau and reputedly the world's oldest working brewery.

The dark, smokey lager was fine.

Does this make me a snob?
