What's up with you?

I've found something to do with my time. I'll be sitting with a friend's mother-in-law, who has dementia. It's an easy gig; she's still able to dress, feed, and toilet herself. I'm just there to make sure she eats and takes her medication.

I'll also be helping her work the TV, which she's become addicted to after years of preferring intellectual pursuits. Bonus: She prefers TCM, which I have missed since cutting the cord.

Just found out a former coworker and friend passed away in August. Obviously, we weren't terrible close or in contact but I'd still consider him more a friend than an acquaintance. Edit: He was a few years younger than I - either age is still too young. He passed from a heart condition that was from cancer treatments he received in the 90s.

A coworker and good friend has been looking forward to a trip back home to Australia to see her dad as he was not expected to have long to live, having been suffering from cancer for years and now with multiplying tumours. Flights booked for this Friday. She was really excited.

He died this morning.

For several years I have received free registration for ALA by virtue of being on a specific committee. I have been wondering why I hadn't gotten a notification yet. Today my chair asked any of us who hadn't to get in touch with RUSA. Which I did, and they are now claiming RUSA members don't get free registration. That was the case in the past, but it was changed about four years ago. I really hope it gets straightened out. This is not a good time for me to come up with an extra $250.

A good news/sad news note: On Monday I received a text message from a friend/coworker with this news. I checked the reply all to see who else she had told. I saw that there were a few people not on the list who should have been.

I sent an email to a couple of people we all had in common. It was nice to reconnect with them, even if it was initiated for unhappy news. That's the good stuff. After wscrolling down their facebooks I disovered some sad stuff.

These people were the ones I used to dog-watch/house-sit for back in the day. I previously told you all about Shadow, their elder Newfie. We all know dogs can't live forever but even knowing that, in my mind it just hadn't happened yet. I learned that the youngest Boxerdoge, Lily had passed just a couple of weeks ago.

So, that happened as well.

I just spent the better part of an hour coming up with a turkey design to 3D print and put on my desk at work.

We stop there again either opening day or the day after and the line is wrapped around the joint. No wait. It had to be opening day. I remember telling my roommate that day was the day and then was the time as the food will never be fresher. But he talked me out of it, which is fine because that line was no joke.

Another thing that kept us from trying it was a random review from a random person. A few weeks back my roommate was driving back from a visit with his folks. He's going around some bendy access ramp and he hits a deer. Kills the deer, dents up his shiny new car and everything. Fast forward to the time between qdoba opening and when we finally make our visit. We're at the rental company and he's trying to do some business and he asks about the qdoba. The lady gives her opinion and my roommate laments that she's not raving about it so it must not be that good.

Anyhoo, all that stuff aside. It was okay. If there wasn't a Chipotle right down the block I'd probably like it better. But there is a Chipotle right down the block. And in my subjective opinion, I like the Chipotle flavors more. The qdoba has only a couple of things that I think really separate them from the Chipotle, but it's not something I'll be wanting all that often.

Upon my return I saw examples of why I'd stayed away: friends and family say the most ignorant things! It's all I can do not to berate them. So ... I post innocuous stuff.

I signed up at a "Quick Weight Loss Center" at the recommendation of my CTO and it has been really effective for me, which is to say I've lost ~35 lbs in 12 weeks. I'm going back to Michigan for the holidays so there might be some regression, but I'm gonna try to be good.
