In the relief department, unless you are a rabid anti-royalist and think we don't have enough change and turmoil going on:
Jolly unsporting of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God Queen of this Realm and of Her other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, to suffer a "heavy cold" and miss multiple public appearances in the last couple of weeks of 2016. But she made it through.

In the we've-given-up-being-surprised department, Keith Richards. Iggy Pop. Charlie Sheen. Hmm, lessons for long life there?

Is it possible that George R. R. Martin survived 2016 because he was its author? I'm just spitballing here. He's been referred to as "Fiction's Most Prolific Serial Killer" for a reason, after all.

I have a theory that there is this amazing new treatment out there in a "Death Becomes Her"-style that celebrities jump on, but the catch is you have to be "dead" to benefit from it. This leads me to believe that a)the survivors of 2016 just haven't heard about it yet or b)are not in the cool enough club + that c)the rate of famous deaths will continue indefinitely.
