He's extremely intelligent, but I've read reports of him saying colossally stupid things, which is what I was getting at. I suppose I should post proof or retract, but it's been awhile since I bothered with Chomsky's political rants. Essentially, he likes to shoot off his mouth at every opportunity, whether he knows what he's talking about or not, and often resorts to strawman characterizations of his opposition. I'll see what I can scare up.
His true calling is linguistics, and I just wish he'd spend more time there than bloviating about politics. He gets credit for outlining the "deep structure" of aspect in the English language, but then again, English doesn't have much in the way of aspect (as opposed to, say, Russian). He's contributed much more than this to the field, of course, but AFAIK the "Chomsky Deep Structure" is what he's most noted for, at least in English grammar studies.
