What an odd coincidence that it was deleted shortly after Jope was alerted.

For anyone who wasn't here 20 years ago and clicks that link, Skep was not actually banned; that was his custom user title. Because I am a curious cat if someone didn't tell me that I would spend an hour scouring his posts trying to figure out why he was banned, so I'm just trying to spare you that effort.

Re: Miscellany
I make coffee at home which is significantly cheaper than going to a cafe. If i were to go to a cafe every day (say Starbucks) I would probably spend at least $5 a day on that.
This is how I'm consoling myself for having spent (on average) about $1.50 a day over the past 18 months on this silly iPhone game.

I don't think I've spent that much on a phone game in total in the past 18 months

Re: Miscellany
I never get tired of job descriptions that say things like "Required: 10 years of experience as an SRE", when the book that introduced the world to the concept was published 7 years ago.

Re: Miscellany
Within a month or so of Java being released you could find job postings requesting 5 years of experience with it.

Re: Miscellany
One day I'm going to post a job ad asking for 5 years experience in a framework that I haven't even released (in effect, and more easily, one I've just made up).

Re: Miscellany
I've been told that one of the factors contributing to different employment outcomes by gender is that men are much more likely to send applications for jobs when they simply do not have listed requirements. Which is an advantage when the "requirements" aren't possible.

Re: Miscellany
My sister and I were just talking about that statistic yesterday and how I don't fit that stereotype. I hate applying for jobs if there's one bullet point in the requirements that I don't feel confident about.

Re: Miscellany
Yeah, that tends to fall along gender lines, but obviously there are exceptions. I will apply for a job even if I only meet about half of the requirements, and zero of the preferred qualifications. I don't always get the job, or even the interview, but I have no problem at least applying.
Of course the reason I do that is that I learned early in my career that that's how men do it, and women are holding ourselves back by actually reading the listing and taking what it says at face value. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take, and all that.
Then I also had to learn by experience that anything you put on your resume is fair game in an interview. That should probably be obvious, but I was told that if you ever touched a technology even one time, then put it on the resume as having experience with it, because it's the truth.
It made for some embarassing interview experiences, but I've been on both sides of that. Just this week I interviewed a guy who had some stuff on his resume, but in the interview he said that he had very little experience with it. He still got the job, based on the other parts of the interview, and who knows if he would have even gotten the interivew without that stuff on his resume.
Anyway, I've learned to be real specific about that, too. Labeling my skills on my resume with categories like passing familiarity, some experience, and expert level.

Re: Miscellany
Oh, haha, also that interview panel was all women (my manager, another engineer, and myself) interviewing a man for this job. How the tables have turned! The engineers on our team are about 2-to-1 men to women, but literally half of the men are on family leave right now, so it looks downright equitable. (That's why you don't hire men. They're always leaving to have babies.)
Also, all of our women engineers are back-end engineers, all of our front-end engineers are men, which is unusual. (We also have men who are back-end enginners, you can do the math on that). The one way we are typical is that all of our non-engineers, like designers and management and admin types, are women.

Re: Miscellany
I am intensely frustrated by the number of reasonably competent engineers I know who are too shy to get jobs.

Re: Miscellany
The ones you know, are they holding back because of shyness?
Or is it because of the insane recruitment processes now common, wherein you have do 17 rounds of interviews with panels of up to 25 managers, and you have to solve at least 3 overdue priority 1 tickets and develop at least one new feature for the company's main product, just in order to get to the final selection?

Re: Miscellany
When using a coin flip to decide something pointless I can't decide I have a habit of adding to the coin flip, best out of 3, 5, etc. to an ever increasing number of indecision.
So now if I haven't looked at the clock in awhile, I use a random event like a car driving by or stepping on a tile to look at the time, with even minutes being one option and odd the other. This way I have to wait long enough to forget the time before it's usable again.
This has been a Miscellaneous post.
