So, the gist of it all is, of course, a study of crime statistics that appears to suggest when the the weather is hotter, crime rates rise.
Comparing crime reports over the decades, it seems evident that crime rates rise with the temperature because Criminals get crankier when they get hot.

(Makes sense. My grandkids always get cranky when the weather is hotter. )

Therefore, Global warming will "Obviously" cause criminals to behave more criminally.

Rather clever for Mr Schulman to turn Global Warming into a Marketing scheme, Don't ya think?

I'm not inclined to look at that paper in detail, but at a glance it appears to estimate the seasonal crime cycle and project that variation to long-term temperature trends. I think their analysis actually removes the effect of any long-term trend from their historic data set:

I regress monthly crime on these bin variables, controlling for extensive fixed effects that capture average crime and weather conditions in each county-by-year and state-by-month group of observations.
