Default Chocolate gravy (for biscuits)

I made this for my breakfast today. The grownup way of eating is to take hot biscuits, open them on your plate, and pour the chocolate gravy over them.

Me, I eat 'em the kids' way: Crumble the biscuits into a bowl and pour the gravy over that.

Chocolate Gravy
1 cup sugar
3 tablespoons self-rising flour
1 heaping tablespoon cocoa powder
2 cups water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Mix the dry ingredients well. Stir in water. Boil mixture until it thickens. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

Pour over hot biscuits.

Sharon, please explain biscuits to me.

For me, biscuits are something you dunk in your tea/coffee. (Cookies).

I wondered if that would come up, Lees. Here's what I mean:

'Course, the ones I had were fluffier.

My grandmother used to make this. I haven't tasted it in a long time, and now I really crave it.

Those look like scones. I thought American biscuits were more like dumplings, or Yorkshire pudding. Anyone know both and can advise?

American biscuit = scone (more or less)

Now, PROPER American biscuits (from the South) have so much butter and fat in them that they could never be mistaken for a scone. Also, you generally don't get American biscuits with things in them like you get raspberry scones and whatnot.

Maybe I should reconsider my thoughts about leaving the south, if those Yankees don't have warm, fluffy biscuits. :chin:

They're not, really. I've made scones, American biscuits, and Yorkshire pudding, and there's a difference.

American biscuits (sometimes known as drop biscuits) are a quickbread with a very liquid batter (though not as liquid as pancakes). They're very short (fatty) and fluffy.

FWIW, the biscuits I've gotten in California are the same type as the biscuits I've gotten in Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina. I've never had a drop biscuit during any of my visits to the south; I've always had the kind that are rolled and cut.

My mom used to make drop biscuits, though. They used the same sort of dough, only a little wetter than the rolled stuff.
