I have heard of people giving birth in the all-fours positon, some claim that it is a more natural position and makes delivery less painful. IMO, drugs make delivery less painful.

I think I've read somewhere that squatting is actually the most comfortable way to give birth. I can't speak from experience and will need to find the reference again to be certain.

I find that a strange thing...I understand how one can get totally into a hot female but enough to want to sculpt a piece of Britney in a doggy position giving birth? The really ironic thing here is that this is a pro-life statue, when in fact, being impregnated by Kevin Federline is a great argument for abortion. It's also great that they are showing the young kids how sexy childbirth really is.

Liv is correct about the crowning. I've been trying to find a picture, but the best one so far is a gif of skeletor doing the statue doggie style.

On a more serious note, during my wife's recent delivery, they had her stop pushing for a while and get up on all fours for a while, but that's because the baby wasn't aligned properly and they were hoping that'd help him get into position. She did end up delivering in normal, lying on her back, fashion though.

I have to admit that I rather like this sculpture, and I think that the "pro-life" angle is intended ironically, if at all. It is an amusing caricature of a sex symbol, especially when juxtaposed with anti-abortion literature.

Even its title, "The Birth of Sean Preston," mockingly evokes the Parthenonesque imagery at work here. We see Britney with the face of some Flavian woman, hair torn from a bust of Marianne, muscled and idealized like Artemis returning from the hunt (let's not forget her role as the goddess of childbirth). The composition of her intellectual if unrealistic beauty and her animalian pose and perch pull her momentarily away from the iconic and towards some strange primal serenity as she prepares to birth the next generation of our nobility. It's neoneoclassical pop kitsch.
