Default The Republicans sent me a letter

For some unknown reason, my e-mail has ended up on the Republican National Committee's mailing list. (ok, I know who did it, and I will deal with them appropriately) So I got the survey yesterday, and I just thought I would share it with the FFers, as I think it offers some interesting insights into the minds of these neo-conservatives.

Excuse all the white space, as I am still a novice at posting HTML on FF.

Dear Kevin ,

You've heard from us. Now, we want to hear from you.

As we formulate our
strategy to win in November, we need your opinion. Enclosed in this e-mail is
your official Republican Grassroots Voices Survey. Please take a moment to share
your opinion on...

The most
important priority facing our nation... why it's important that we retain our
Republican majorities in November... how you'd like to get involved online...
where you get your news... and anything else - by sharing your thoughts at the
end of the survey.

Please be sure to
return the survey as soon as possible. We will be sharing your thoughts with our
leaders in Congress for their action. Your answers will be used to formulate a
blueprint for victory in 2006 and 2008.

Politics is
changing - and new technology empowers you to connect with our Party's leaders
and elected representatives at the click of a button. Take a moment to fill out
this important survey and tell our Party's leaders what you think.

Sincerely,

Ken Mehlman
Chairman, Republican
National Committee

P.S. With this
survey, you'll have a chance to sign up for our Grassroots Voices
Initiative.
By signing up, you'll receive exclusive e-mail alerts about new
online polls - and be the pulse of the Republican Party.

If you have trouble
submitting this survey or would like to complete it online, click here

Oh my. Lucky you.

The Republicans are watchin' ya :watch:

Who's your NC rep? I'm delighted to be represented by Brad Miller, a very cool dem. At least there's one person in Washington that kinda represents me, since Liddy Dole and Richard Burr suck so hard.

...Republican grassroots...

Chuck? Are you a North Cacalakian?

You can definately see why Bob needs all that erectile medication with a wife like Libby.

Howard Coble is our rep, he's a Republican. Which is no suprise because this area is the reddest part of this red state.

I cannot stand Howard Coble. You have my condolences. At least you're not in the 13th, where that certifiable whacko Vernon Robinson is running. :scared2:

I never really make it out to HP, but I'm up for the drive. I usually go to the one at Brassfield, since the one on Friendly is too skeezy, and the one at Four Seasons is on High Point Road where I never go unless I'm going to Border's.

I have no problem with driving up to Brassfield either. Now that I have the motorcycle, all I need is an excuse to ride. Have you been to the Palladium? It's in north High Point on Wendover and 68, so it's not really that far out of the way. Anyway, I'm staying out of downtown High Point for the next week or so because of the furniture market.

Urgh, furniture market sucks. I've not been out to the Palladium; I haven't lived full-time in the immediate vicinity area in 7 or 8 years, so I miss new things sometimes. I won't be back until sometime in July.

I'm surprised by the use of the term 'Hollywood Liberal' though I'm not sure such a thing doesn't exist.

Otherwise, what's wrong with it?

Glad you asked that question, I feel like a rant. I could go on for quite a while on this, so I'll try to keep it short.

First of all, I think the idea that rich, self-serving fundamentalists are "grassroots" is totally removed from reality. I could give a lot of generalities about moral-superiority and fear-mongering, instead let me address the questions one-at-a-time.

1.) Why can I only select three things that are important to me? And I love the order of their list, it puts "Moral and ethics in government" at the very bottom. Go down the list and ask yourself "What have the Republicans done for this issue".

Keeping taxes low: This is the only one of the answers that you could possibly argue that the Republicans have accomplished. However, most of the tax breaks were for rich people, and even if my taxes are less my, bottom line has been significantly reduced during this administration, due to out of control health care and fuel costs.

Immigration & border security: Illegal immigration is at an all time high, and it has been recently proven that radioactive material can easily pass border securty.

Winning the War On Terror: Notice they didn't say "Fighting the War on Terror". IMO this administration has done more to strengthen and further the cause of the terrorists. Bin Laden is still at large, Iraq is plunging into civil war, we have isolated ourselves from a large portion of the world. If that's "winning", monkey's are going to start flying out of my ass.

Growing Our Economy: Please, don't even get me started.

Improving Education: And how are they doing that? By introducing religion into the classroom, and removing science?

Increasing access to affordable health care: I was just reading today that the number of uninsured Americans has nearly doubled in the last five years. My insuance premiums have gone up 600% in the same amount of time.

Protecting Social Security: Uhhh.... didn't Bush want to privatize this? Not exactly protecting it.

Energy independence: We've made giant leaps forward in this area. Wait... no we haven't, we're more dependent than ever. Gas has gone up 300% in the last five years, but I'm sure that Bush being an oil man has nothing to do with it.

Appointing qualified judges: Like Bushes neo-con, sycophant personal lawyer?

Strengthening marriage and the family: C'mon. We know exactly what is being said here. "Let's keep them gays from gettin hitched".

Morals and ethics in government: :wtfsign: This obviously hasn't been a very high priority so far.

2.)
- To insure America continues to stand united and strong in fighting the War on Terror. (why is War on Terror capitalized?)

United and strong, hmmm.... I guess we are united as long as you ignore half the people in this country (probably more than half by now). And I guess we are strong as long as you forget about all our weaknesses.

-To help President Bush enact his reform agenda for America.

Here's a clip from a progress report:

"I am happy to report that an enormous amount of rapid progress on this reform agenda has been made, especially in the last year and a half. The key reforms that have been implemented are:

• collective action clauses in external sovereign bonds;
• creation of clear limits and criteria for exceptional borrowing from the IMF;
• use of grants in partial replacement of loans from the World Bank;
• introduction of a system for measuring results at the World Bank;
• a focus on core expertise at the IMF and World Bank with division of labor."

This is stuff that "grassroots" people are going to be happy as hell about.

-To keep Democrat leaders like Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Howard Dean from pushing through their extreme left-wing agenda.

This is as opposed to their extreme right-wing agenda. Nothing but divisive fear-mongering.

-To make President Bush's tax cuts permanent and keep our economy growing.

Tax cuts and pork barrell spending are not going to keep our economy growing.

-To uphold our nation's bedrock values.

This is my absolute favorite, moral superiority at it's finest. We all know this means Christian values.

3.) What are you most afraid of? Damn, they cut right to the chase.

Democrats will try to censure or impeach President Bush.

We can only dream! Also very interesting that that answer came first.

Democrats would raise your taxes.

Those damn tax and spend liberals! Isn't this rhetoric a little old?

Democrats would cut and run from the central front in the War on Terror.

Of course, this means Iraq. I guess "cut and run" means anyone with an exit strategy.

Democrats would sell out American values to Hollywood liberals

I don't even know what that means. I guess they think it's far better to sell us out to the Chinese, or to the oil cartel.

Democrats would impose government-run health care

The good Lord only meant health care for rich people who can afford it.

There is more to the survey, but I think these questions were the real "meat" of it. I guess my overall point is that all of this is tired old rhetoric, that is has no basis in reality, and shows how these people think that only certain kinds of people count (namely rich, white, heterosexual, protestant Christians). When they say "united", they mean "people doing it our way, without question". When they say "bedrock values", they mean "my values".

I could ramble on for quite a while at this point, but I'll spare you... for now.

I'm in NC too, btw.

My mom gets emails from those people sometimes too. It's kinda funny tho, cuz besides the fact that she is most definitely not a Republican, she can't vote anyway, because she's not an American citizen, so I gotta wonder why they started sending them to her.

Damn erimir, I didn't realize there were so many North Carolinians here at FF. Where are you at?

I have a good suspicion that one of my parents put me on the mailing list, most likely my mom. Her main sources of news are Pat Robertson and Rush Limbaugh (spelling?). I love the woman to death, but she frustrates the hell out of me.

Well, what's important to me is that all of the current executive staff members, elected or appointed, be tossed out of office.

Second in importance is that any Republican presently elected to Congress and standing for re-election, be turned out of office.

Third in importance is that any Republican running for office, anywhere in the country, at no matter what level, be refused by the voters.

This is because I value morality and integrity in governance.

Most of the questions were of the "Have you stopped beating your wife?" sort, that was the main problem he was getting at.

I would be unable to finish the survey because there is no good answer I could give to some of the questions, because they are not simply "what is important to me" questions.

Like the one about things I'd be afraid the Democrats would do. I'm not afraid of any of those. There is no "most afraid" of, because in fact, I view those things favorably.

It's like the question "Do you think Bush is a great president, or the greatest president?"

That's very similar to a paper survey my roommate received from the Republican running for Congress in our district. Lots of 'How important is <insert GOP talking point here> to you?' questions, and no way to answer them in such a way as to indicate that the questsions themselves were disingenuous and misleading. One was actually something like 'How much safer has Presidnet Bush's War on Terror made you?', with answers like 'A little safer', 'Extremely safe', etc. He ended up writing his answers in the margins and mailing it back.

Too bad I delete all the similar Democratic emails I get. They're full of just as much rhetoric but, eh, I dunno...I may just be biased, but the questions don't seem to be quite as propaganda-ish.
