Default Sex Slave Trade

I can't decide which forum this thread belongs in, so I'll start here.

I saw a documentary last night about the child sex trade, called The Day My God Died. I had heard about this phenomenon before, but I had no idea how widespread and insidious it was in some parts of the world. They say 2500 girls and women around the world are kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery every day. They provide extensive footage of what I believe they called the largest contiguous red light district in the world, in Bombay, where 80% of the 200,000 prostitutes have HIV/AIDS and the girls (many of whom are sold to the pimps there by kidnappers) are regularly beaten and raped unless they cooperate. Overall a very sad, disturbing film. :(

I haven't seen that particular piece, but I remember seeing something on the world sex slave trade it before. What grosses me out is these American companies that organize tours for men wanting to have sex with children. It's disgusting.

I dunno if I want to purposely get disturbed, but I will check out the film you mention.

I've read that "clients" actually prefer the really young girls -- as they're less-likely to have AIDS or other such diseases.

Sickening.

Sickening, yes, but pah to your first sentence. No such rational analysis applies! They just like younger girls full stop, and it's sick.

Very apt name. I saw mere snippets of a similar documentary a couple of days ago, and was disturbed so much I could barely talk for hours. If some of those girls' fathers or brothers took justice into their own hands, performing the most gruesome tortures on their abusers before killing them, I doubt I could convict them.

Problem is.... in most parts of the world it's most likely to be their fathers and/or brothers selling them into that situation in the first place.... :fuming:

This has been on my mind for years. What can we do, the average Joes with very limited funds? I want to be activist in a cause for these children, but cannot see where to even begin. I know of no local groups that give a dern about this global problem.

Probably the best thing you can do short of giving money or flying to Nepal to work in one of the shelters or something is spread awareness of the issue by recommending this film and/or engaging people in discussion of the subject. Here are some other ideas.
