Default Jon Benet - Red Herring?

Whenever a story like this out-of-the blue weirdo in Bankok opening up a sensational story ten years old comes up to dominate the media in near entirety, something makes me stop and ask: what all else is going on in the world right now that this would seem a timely distraction from?

Well, kinda coincidentally Mr. Bush being found to have acted unconstitutionally in overstepping his authority in authorizing wiretapping of US citizens could have been some pretty heavy stuff. According to one news source "The judge (in this weeks's ruling) said the government, in defending the (president's) program, appeared to be saying the president had the "inherent power" to violate laws of Congress." This effectively means that LAWS WERE VIOLATED. Ehem, ol' Tricky Dick went down in flames for the very same thing though surely having targeted far less people.

Once again, a red herring--be it one of design or one of astoundingly timely conicidence--has driven the news world off the scent of deep substance in favor of some salacious irrelevance. Poor little Jon Benet is still being victimized--she's now a red herring for Bush to get away with crime.

Define 'get away with'. While I agree that the latest bizarre headline story might distract a bit of public outrage from the fact that an actual court has stated what sane people have been aghast at for months (i.e. The Bush administration's stated opinion that the President has the inherent power to break the law whenever he deems it necessary), I highly doubt that Jon Benet Ramsey will sway the judicial branch one way or another.

Y'know... I've been sittin' here for a week, wondering the same thing.

Sorta like a magician, distracting the audience to conceal their legerdemain.

I'd say if it was anything political, it'd be the upcoming mid-term elections. Maybe they think the Demos are soft on child rape and murder.

Why do some heinous crimes get long time attention and coverage and others sink like stones? I really don't care about JonBenet and I can't believe the amount of press that case has gotten nationwide.

Half a loaf and a circus.
