Supposedly that child has a lot of problems, and opening the present was but the straw that broke the camels back. Of course, it appears that his problems are a result of mental disorders ... so the mom's attempt to "scare his straight" probably will not work.

What a weird story. I mean, they told the kid what the present was, then told him he couldn't open it before Christmas or he gets juvie instead of Super Mario?

Oh, and yes, I thought this was going to be about Kev too. :giggles:

I think that mother should be fined for wasting police time like that. There are people with real problems out there that may need help, there are real crimes in need of investigating.

The boy has behavioral problems and his meds aren't working and you can't control him? Take him to a doctor, a therapist, a specialist, hell a group home....don't have him arrested.

Well this story did inspire me to yell arrest that man. I heard it on our local tv news and wondered what in the world?

I think the child may need some help, but I don't think arresting him was the answer.

sometimes if not most of the time you have to look at how the child was raised from a baby to the age they are now. it kills me everytime i hear an adult claim they can't control a child, put a child on the same level as them or adults period, or don't dicipline the child at all. what kind of child do they expect?

His mother plans to ask the state to take custody of him during an upcoming court appearance.

this statement tells me alot;for one, where is the father? that present it's own set of problems. some women can't handle boys as they get older.

Hmm.... I just did a "what if I had done that when I was a kid."
If I had been acting up and disobeying (that's what seems to be the story) and was told not to open a present and I openly defied my parent/grandparent by opening the present anyway, then the present would have been taken away with the intention of taking it back to the store and me not getting it for christmas.
Is that not an obvious solution to the situation?

I believe the mother's decision was precisely correct.

If I'd done that, there would have been a switch involved. Definitely some solitary confinement. Hard labor, as well. But no police.

As many times as my brother and I would very carefully open our presents and then tape them back growing up I guess we should both be hardened criminals by now.

Actually I was being ironic. I followed the link and read the first half-dozen armchair judges and parents condemning the mother and/or the legal system on what is really no good information, so thought I'd join in with my own ill-informed yet confident proclamation.

A lot of people think my Mom overreacted when she had me arrested at 13, but I feel pretty confident that she did the best she could under the circumstances.

I had read the story previously vm, and I don't think "arrest him" was the correct course of action.
