Default I got this idiot newsletter from the Libertarian Party - Could this be genuine??!!

My response:
Newsletter text below

I am questioning whether or not this is a genuine message sent from the Libertarian Party. If it is, I am very insulted.

In your message you assumed that I was stupid enough to believe and gulp down your biased lies.

You stated: "Under such a bizarre interpretation of the law, thugs who assault a Satanist because of "religious bias" could be punished more severely than if they attack a priest, rabbi, or any ordinary American..."

This is a blatant lie. If the motivation is rooted in religious bias, the punishment would be the same for attacking a priest, rabbi, or satanist. If a person hates a priest because they hate Catholicism, they will be punished just the same as if the attacked a stanist because they hated satan worship.

You think I am that stupid? I'm getting off your email list.

"...and steal their wallet, assuming they're motivated only by greed, Seehusen noted."

If it is proven that they are motivated by greed alone and not by religious bias, they will not be punished for a hate crime. Get a GRIP, IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You stated: "Is the life of a priest, rabbi, president or any ordinary American worth less than that of a Satanist?" he asked. "In the bizarre world of hate-crime legislation, the answer is yes -- because their murderer would get a less severe punishment."

RELIGION IS PROTECTED UNDER HATE CRIMES LAWS AND THEREFORE IT IS A HATE CRIME TO COMMIT AN UNLAWFUL ACT AGAINST ANY PERSON OF ANY RELIGION OUT OF MOTIVATION OF RELIGIOUS BIAS.

If you're seriously asking, it looks like the answer is yes.

It's a bizarre newsletter. The beginning snears at Satanists, most remarkably in that quote from Seehusen: "When a law supposedly designed to protect religious minorities is being used to protect devil-worshippers, our criminal justice system has been turned upside down." But I think their point is just to dismiss hate crime legislation; Satanists just make for very handy scapegoats.

For instance, I think in the "greed alone" bit they're trying to say that someone who beats up a rabbi for any reason -- whether it be greed or anti-semitism -- should get the same penalty because punishing someone for hate more than for greed is punishing someone for what he thinks rather than what he does.

I don't buy the argument, myself, because the justice system makes those kinds of calls all the time, special circumstances to determine capital crime are a prime example, and extenuating circumstances to reduce penalty on the other end of the spectrum.

Still and all, it's a pretty standard libertarian argument, only this time they've couched it in cheesy punchlines and contempt at Satanist expense.

:yup: Exactly. There is also the issue of motive as evidence towards proving guilt, so religious bias may be brought up in that context as well as the sentencing.

Well... What did you expect? After all, as far as I'm concerned, the term "Libertarian Party" is an oxymoron.

FormerFundie2004, I quite agree with your sentiments and your reasoning. (The caps and exclamation marks will make it easier for the Libertopians to dismiss your reply as nutty, but then, you're dealing with people not known for their keen appreciation of data in any case.)

Wow, you all aren't surprised; you even expected this from them.

Why is it that the LP can generate such conservative jargon and yet adopt such a wonderful philosophy: live and let live, reduce taxes, reduce government, and let people do what they want! They don't want to tax us to death, and they don't want to nosy around in our bedrooms.

However, they do have a lot of stupid ideas, such as legalizing drugs...

Um, many of us here do not think legalizing drugs is a stupid idea. Perhaps that should be in another thread though.

How does opposing the legalization of drugs jibe in the least with the "live and let live" perspective?

Personally, I'm fine with social libertarianism. Legalize drugs, stop legislating morality, and so forth. Economic libertarianism, however, can tend to be cruel, inhumane, and very very shortsighted.

Hence the distinction between Libertarianism and libertarianism.

Civil Libertarianism, also referred to as simply 'libertarianism' (L intentionally left lower case) or 'left-libertarianism' is primarily 'play nice dammit.'

Libertarianism, as in the platform of the Libertarian party, has been summed up with the phrase 'all the freedom money can buy.'
