Default Turkey: Sandwich AND Ally

So...I just caught a snippet of news out of Turkey about women wearing head-scarves in schools. Evidently, there is a push to allow it, as a woman wearing a headscarf is presently against the law.

Watser? can correct me, but I understand this to be a remnant of the Ataturk Revolution, which was sternly secular and strongly discouraged overt religious display in public. I find it interesting that here the case seems to be unleashing unwilling observance of the law to allow the religious to follow their practices in the public realm.

Should the ban on women's head-scarves in universities be lifted?

ETA: HERE So...The Turkish Army is currently the government? Is that right?

No, it's an elected government. The Army is one of the checks and balances. Things get too theocratic for their liking, they'll step in and redress the situation.

The ruling party right now is a religious party, you might say the Islamic version of our European Christian Democrats, but they are the third or forth party to have come out of its banned predecessor. The army has overthrown the government several times in the 1980s and they still threaten to do that when they feel there is too much 'chaos' or Atatürk's secular state is under threat. The latest constitutional crisis was over who should be president. The army was not prepared to accept the AK party's candidate (Ak means white btw), but in the end the army gave in.

:glare:

It's a reference from "the President's Palm Messenger", circa 2001.
