Default Sunset for Uncle Sam

BBC NEWS | US global dominance 'set to wane'

US economic, military and political dominance is likely to decline over the next two decades, according to a new US intelligence report on global trends.

Just sayin' ...

I don't see this as being a bad thing.

"Strategic rivalries are most likely to revolve around trade, investments and technological innovation and acquisition, but we cannot rule out a 19th Century-like scenario of arms races, territorial expansion and military rivalries," the report says.

"Types of conflict we have not seen for a while - such as over resources - could re-emerge."
I absolutely expect to see this, whether the predicted decline (which I think is already in motion) of the United States occurs or not. The collapse of the US dollar as the monetary standard...well, we already have had a few shots over the bow.

As to whether this is a bad thing or not, that depends on one's perspective. The inevitable fall that proceedeth from pride could prove ultimately good for the nation's soul (assuming people as a group are capable of learning anything, a notion of which I remain unconvinced), but I'm pretty sure having China, Russia and/or India fill that gap will not be good news for the world.

"I wonder if Honorius, watching the Visigoths coming over the seventh hill, truly realized that the Roman Empire was about to fall?"

There. My gratuitous ST:TNG reference for the day.

Don't even get me started. How any series can maintain such support with that many sci-fi cliches, unimaginative scenarios, illogical "logical" characters and simply appalling movie renditions is beyond me. On the other hand, there is some resemblence to the Bush administration.

I'm in too good a mood this morning to nerd-rage about it beyond that. Besides, I can always put the anti-Trek nutters on ignore. :P

Did you see the episode where they encountered an old space probe and Piccard was given memories of living, marrying and having children in a long extinct civilization? I thought that was well done.

The rest of the series forced me to stop watching before I got to that one, good one unfortunately

And did you see the one where Kirk et al discovered the Tribbles which were actually pom-poms and the only way they'd move was if Kirk was 'surreptitiously' shaking them when he was holding them?
