How in the fuck were they allowed to trademark the name of the state?

Does the Texastm state government have to pay royalties to call itself that now? Do map makers need to get permission form UT before putting the state in an atlas? Do I need to pay UT for the right to say Texastm in this post?

My parents live in Pinehurst, NC (as did I until recently) which is notably a golf resort community. The name of the largest and most prestigious golf resort in the area? Pinehurst Resorts, of course. The town of Pinehurst was founded because of the resort and was incorporated long after the existence of the resort, so I guess that's part of the reason why Pinehurst Resorts thinks it owns the name Pinehurst for all purposes.

They've sued to get many local businesses to stop using "Pinehurst" in their names, and even tried to get the town to only use its full official name, "Village of Pinehurst" for official business.

Smaller scale, but the same bullshit. The town is Pinehurst, so not everything is going to be automatically assumed to be part of Pinehurst Resorts, so it's not to protect consumers.

You can probably use the character code though - hold down the left Alt key and type 0153 on the number keypad, then let the Alt key go.

(If you're on a laptop keyboard you won't have a dedicated number keypad, but most laptops let you use the keys MJKLUIO789 as a number keypad [don't press the zero key on the top row - use Alt-M for zero]. You should have enough html knowledge that you're not likely to mess up the rendering of pages.
Also you have to promise to not be evil.
Then you just ask liv or vm to add you to the group.
