Going to Atlanta, then Milwaukee, this weekend
Come Friday morning, I'm flying to Atlanta, then heading to Milwaukee on Sunday morning and returning to St. Louis on Monday morning.
The guy that owns the film company that contributed to HBO's special is hiring me to do a bunch of filmed interviews; he's gotten really into the documentary thing, doing pieces on "alternative" relationships and related issues. On Friday afternoon I will be interviewing a first amendment attorney in Atlanta. He specializes in obscenity cases, representing adult retail stores, etc; we'll be getting his take on the state's weird-ass regulations on sex toys and the like. Saturday, I will be interviewing a lesbian couple. Sunday, in Milwaukee, interviewing a lesbian couple that has adopted a child, for their take on the current politics surrounding that topic.
I'm looking forward to visiting a couple places I've never been to before, although I don't have a clue what to do in my free time there.
Anyway, wish me luck And if any of youse have any suggestions on "must see places" in either city, please share!

Good for you! I hope it is all very interesting.
Eat dinner at The Abbey in Atlanta, I recommend the ostrich. They also have excellent monastic wines.

What are you interested in? The Milwaukee Art Museum is pretty impressive. When I lived in Milwaukee I was a poor college student, and most of my "free-time" centered around drinking, so I am probably not the best source of info .

Happy trails there Lauri D.
The interviewing stuff sounds really cool and I'm sure you'll do a great job. Have a lot of fun.

In Milwaukee: eat cheese and drink beer. Seriously.
And in Atlanta you should visit Jobar, Southernhybrid and Putney Swope! So-Hy and her irascible husband live in a suburb, and Jobar lives out in the country, but not too far out.

What? No bratwurst?
Where's the best place in Milwaukie for Lauri to get a brat, cheese & beer?
I thought the state motto of Wisconsin was "Eat cheese or die!"

There'll be plenty of brats, cheese, beer, sweet corn, and music at Summerfest for Laurie to enjoy.

Ah yes, perfect timing for with summerfest going on. Plenty of food stands with all types of food. You will find Brats, Cheese and Beer aplenty.

Don't forget to say hi to Jacey, too. And have him take you to the Underground. It's really cool, and he's never been.

Did somebody say CHEESE???
Thanks for the tips all! I'm excited about the trip. The only downside is that I won't have my own transportation for driving to visit other people; still need to find out exactly where I will be staying.
Now I'll be dreaming of cheese for the next few nights....

In spite of the Braves, Atlanta is a pretty cool town!

I can't speak for anyone of course, but I am sure there are infidels who would come and visit you or meet you somewhere. You're an II celebrity; I've seen links to your deconversion story all over the web. (And I think Jobar is a fan of your film work.)

Sounds like life's pretty interesting for you right now Lauri. I'm curious, have you chucked your day job? Did I miss something? Or is this a working vacation? Or is it, in fact, your day job...?

I am currently practicing being a semi-professional deadbeat
I quit my job in Southern California when my house sold, and worked for a short while for my former boss sort of freelance, working from home, but jettisoned that a few months ago to be freeeeeee. I've invested most of the profit from my house sale in a few different things, with a little set aside for temporary deadbeating. The interviewing gigs and odd stuff like that are keeping me from the necessity of regular work.
I tell you what, the best part has been no longer living by an alarm clock five mornings a week. I threw that fucker out the day I quit.
