Murtha's a douche. Not as big a douche as, say, Ted Stevens or Michelle Bachman, but a douche nonetheless.

Re: Election day 2008
I think my favorite part will be when Obama takes your money and your guns and imposes Sharia law. Or maybe Secretary of Education William Ayers. I hope he hands out condoms to your kids while teaching them evolution, if only to save your daughter a few trips to the state-funded abortion clinic that's going to open down the street.

Re: Election day 2008
re: outstanding races, Kos sez:
Quote:
Alaska: With 99% of precincts reported, Ted Stevens (R) leads Mark Begich (D) by 3500 votes.
There are reportedly over 60,000 absentee ballots filed, so no one has called it yet.
Georgia: Saxby Chambliss (R) leads Jim Martin (D) 50-46. However, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that over 600,000 early votes have not been counted. Martin led handily in early voting, so it's highly likely that Chambliss will end up below 50% and this will go to a runoff.
Minnesota: Norm Coleman leads by less than 600 votes now. All outstanding ballots will matter, and there's the possibility of a recount as well.
Oregon: Gordon Smith (R) leads Jeff Merkley (D) by 15,000 votes with 75% of precincts reporting. Not looking good.
|
My emphasis.

A law banning all wagering or parimutuel betting on dog racing would shut down the dog tracks, but most coursing clubs wouldn't be affected. I've actually never encountered a coursing club where any money changes hands, except for entry fees.

Better yet, you may actually become enlightened and reject the state's authority in recognizing any kind of marriage at all. You can actually lead the world towards true freedom -- but that is a long shot.
|
Yippie! Our inauthentic anarchist speaks up again without engaging his brain.
Here you seem to forget that in the present political context, the state's definition of marriage is the only one that matters. Anyone can 'recognize' the validity of a gay marriage, but just by saying, "Poof! Your marriage is legitimate!" doesn't actually convey any of the legally-recognized benefits of marriage, like the right to inherit as next-of-kin, the right to remain in an apartment after the death of one's partner, hospital visitation rights, the right to act on a loved one's behalf in case of incapacitation, etc.
Now, what I would like to know is how "reject[ing] the state's authority in recognizing any kind of marriage at all" is going to generate true freedom when there are freedom-denying laws like Proposition 8 on the books. Pretending a problem isn't there isn't going to lead the world to any sort of freedom, it's going to lead it to a schizophrenic break.
I'm sure that I could go away to some "authentic anarchist" hideaway like some religious ascetic, harangue real anarchists on the internet, and engage in masturbatory fantasies of how this is actually leading the world 'freedom', but I prefer engagement with the real world.

Good thing they sometimes have different hair color or I would totally go home with the wrong guy.
Just as I figured, voting for Obama is not as progressive as some people hoped, looking at the discriminatory ballot measures that passed.

Because the only way to make the stamps last all month is to eat bologna sandwiches all month, and he'd rather eat "real" food, even if it means he has to beg half the time.
So, yeah, tell your friends to sign right up for that.
Oh! I forgot to quote ... who was it, CT? About the black and latino religious voters voting Yes on 8. I get that they're religious, but it's so sad to me that they would vote in favor of discrimination when they know first hand what it's like to be on the receiving end of that. Oh well.

Yes, they know what it's like to be discriminated against for being Latino or Black. But this is where identity politics comes into play, because rather than identifying as human, and thereby gaining some empathy, they are happy enough to discriminate against the "real" "other". It is a common phenomenon. We've just run out of solid "racial types" to discriminate against.

Aw, it shouldn't be too hard to make an "I love Canada" smiley; the artist just needs to be careful that the little smiley guy doesn't end up looking like he's performing oral on Nova Scotia.

The only "freedom" that is being denied is state recognition and the state privileges that are granted to people who are married.
Now, what I want to know is why a confused-socialist-who-pretends-to-be-an-anarchist such as you are seeks to defend state privilege to "married" people -- be they straight or gay -- discriminating against unmarried people.
