I am glad none of my patrons thought of doing this.

Re: Miscellany
I got my hair did and am totally loving my new stylist who I have been seeing the last few months. We get along really well and have been hanging out. Early on, we realized we were both mid cities kids of a similar age but we went to different high schools and dropped the whole "Did you know Schmoe?" routine when we realized we had little in common at that age.
BUT today we were talking and realized that we lived less than 200 yards away from each other growing up. She lived on the other side of the park that my house faced. Blew my freaking mind. We also went to the same middle school, though we were in different years. She was telling me all about how she was trying a million different styles even as a kid, granola, punk, goth, you name it. None of it clicked until I got into the car. She went by a different name when she was young because we had another conversation about Bort license plates and odd spellings of names. . .
I totally remember her. We had art together during her Nirvana stage and she was obsessed with Kurt Cobain and wearing black after he died. She was the first girl I ever met who talked about openly about masturbation. I won't lie, while she was really nice and we would often work together in class, she kinda freaked me the fuck out when we were kids.
Now I am loling my face off at the small worldiness of it and how my 12 year old, Pollyanna, nerdy-girl self would never have dreamed I'd be going out to have drinks with That Girl.
We are going to a show tonight and I can wait to tell her and see if she remembers me. I was such a weird kid myself it is entirely possible I freaked her out in entirely different ways.

Re: Miscellany
I just got a push poll from Americans for Prosperity telling me that a current ballot question asking for a five year moratorium on fracking in the city is proposing a permanent ban on all oil and gas activities in the city.
I told the polltaker that this was a complete lie, but that it wasn't her fault. She apologized and actually seemed pretty sincere about it. Poor kid. It actually made me even madder that they're hiring kids to do that cold calling and then tricking them into lying. (When I initially said that wasn't true, she asked if I'd read the fine print. The ballot question is about 50 words long, and the proposed amended language is maybe two or three hundred words. There's no fine print.)
This is the main reason I've stayed registered as a Republican, so I can keep up with some of the shitty shit those shits are up to. Don't get me wrong, I hate Democrats too, but we never get shit like this coming from them.

Re: Miscellany
Those styles of map are sort of subtly deceptive, IMO. The trends can be interesting, but with girl names, the top names are generally hovering around 1%. They are distinctive trends, but they're not as pervasive as the maps make it seem. (Sort of like that dumb obesity map that bugs me.)
Compare them to the boy names, though. Popular boy names are much more pervasive and much more common.
The all-time most popular girl name on those charts, Mary, is less prevalent over time than the top 6 boy names, Jennifer is less common than 13 boy names, and Lisa is less common than 29. It makes sense, because people are probably more likely to name boys after male relatives, and boys' names are more likely chosen to confer social status, whereas girl names are more likely to be chosen for subjective reasons, because they sound nice, making them more subject to trending.

Re: Miscellany
We had this whole panic amongst the 'Omg the mooslims!!!' crowd about how Mohammed was the most popular boys name. It was still only 5% of the total or something along those lines. And most of the rest are traditional Dutch (sarcasm alert) boys names like Jeffrey, Yuri, John, Jayden or Milan.

Re: Miscellany
Mick used to get straight As in French class and his teachers always praised him for having a Parisian accent. His trick was to imitate Pepe le Peu.
