I've been reading a lot of Sherlock Holmes stories. I can't help myself.

I just finished Grishams The Appeal. Pissed me off, but very realistic.

Chris Stewart was the original drummer and founding member of the rock band, Genesis.

I read all of his earlier books which were about his adventures running a small primitive farm in Andalusia; those were were good so I got this latest one. It chronicles an earlier part of his life, where he learned to sail and was part of the crew of a hundred year old sailing ship that sailed from England to Nova Scotia via Norway and Iceland.

Unscientific America How Scientific Illiteracy Threatens our Future, by Chris Mooney (Of The Republican War on Science fame). So far so good.

I finished The Time-Traveler's Wife, and it was one of the most magnificent things I've read.

For some reason, I can't get my head around nonfiction lately, so I temporarily dropped the Perlstein to read...

Edit: Huh...I'm not seeing the link and pic. It's Douglas Coupland's JPod.

I blew through like 90% of it last night (thank you, cold that prevents me from doing anything more exciting than sitting on the couch with a book!), and I think I like it. It would make a great movie. Even Coupland's use of my all time least favorite writer's gimmick, inserting himself into the story as a character, didn't wreck it for me. I don't understand what compels any author to think this is ever a good idea. Yes, I get how painfully clever it is that it's the author himself who performs all the deus ex machinas in the story. I don't care. It's cutesy, it's groin-grabbingly self-aware, not to mention self-indulgent, and it sucks.

I'm not actually familiar with any of Coupland's other novels. Anyone have any idea if they're any good?

I read "The Rape of Nanking" by Iris Chang. Man, depressing. Even more still when you find out she committed suicide after writing it. My cousin produced a play about her "By the Number" about her death and dealing with genocide.

A little too much uplifting last week, but I'll keep it in mind.

This week I'm thinking about food, probably too much.
"Omnivore's Dilemma: a natural history of four meals" and "In Defense of Food" both by Michael Pollan.

"In Defense of Food" was a good short read. I think it took two hours. I recommend it. It's not too depressing either. Short advice, "eat food, mostly leaves, not too much" is the advice.

I returned 2666 to the library without finishing it. I was not captivated by part 5 and could not force myself to keep reading, especially because I did not think it would take me where I wanted to go.

I have not had a lot of time to do any reading of late, but the last book I finished was Parasite Rex : Inside the Bizarre World of Nature's Most Dangerous Creatures by Carl Zimmer. Captivating, informative and well written.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through Columbine and wow. Just wow. Almost everything I thought I knew about it was plain wrong.

Taking two history courses, one on British Hist from 1848, the other Medieval Crusades.

Lots of reading for both, mostly primary sources, but I am looking for supplementals. Anyone read anything they could reccomend?

The Crusades Through Arab Eyes by Amin Maalouf is pretty much indispensable if you want the view from the other side.

The Yogi Book: "I Really Didn't Say Everything I Said!"

When asked at the opening of his library in 2005, Yogi Berra was asked if he was at least "happy" for the Red Sox fans that they "finally" won a World Series.

He immediately responded: "They could have waited another year."

I quite liked and would totally recommend Generation X and Microserfs. Life After God and Shampoo Planet were okay in my opinion. I stopped reading his books after those four, but maybe I will check out the one you are reading. :yup:

I am currently reading Jim Thompson's Pop. 1280, having recently finished Savage Night. I do loves me some pulpy fiction!
