Dutch military in Iraq abuse row

Military interrogators from the Netherlands abused dozens of Iraqi prisoners following the 2003 invasion, according to a Dutch press report.

Detainees were allegedly subjected to bright lights, soaked with water and exposed to high-pitched sounds, De Volkskrant newspaper said.

The newspaper quoted a defence ministry spokesman as saying things took place "not according to instruction".

The claims were made days before the country's parliamentary elections.

I have always wondered this: what was the fallout from Srebrenica in the Netherlands? Did people blame the military, or UNPROFOR's total impotence?

Well they blamed the Serbs mostly..

The reactions were mixed, there was no way the garrison could have resisted a direct Serb attack without any air support, which was not forthcoming.
But most people were ashamed of how the military surrendered without firing a shot and the commander was even seen drinking with general Mladic. And some people wondered if the Serbs would have dared to wipe out troops of a NATO country if they had resisted. Personally I doubt it.

The minister of Defense resigned over it and later, when a damning parliamentary commission report came out a government resigned over it, but it was two months before the elections, so that was a symbolic act.
