Default Canadian Religious Right Seeks to Reverse Progress on Marriage

See the article here . I am not entirely surprised by their reaction. I do hope that they do not gain political traction. One nation on this continent has already fallen to their grip. I would hope that Canada is able to resist them better. I do agree with the raising of the age of consent, though. It should be raised to 18 instead.

What I wonder about is how they seek to reverse the marriage decision. While I am not surprised with the backlash, it will be nearly impossible to put the genie back in the bottle. Gay people growing up in Canada now know that marriage is possibility for them if they find love. They will fight tooth and nail to protect their hard fought recognition of the their rights to marry those they love.

This isn't the same issue as abortion. The ethics of abortion are at least arguable. There is no argument that can be made to deny the right of two consenting adults the right of marriage.

Upon reading further into the article one interesting thing was noticed by me. It seems the religiously conservative base is proportionally smaller in Canada than it is in the US. Their movement may not have the kind of traction that it does here. While I do support their right to have their voices heard and their views known, I do hope they fail on the issue of gay marriage.

Think abortion in the US climate.

They don't need to reverse it; indeed, the majority of canny strategists and insiders don't want to reverse, since that would at once dry up the funding and unleash a very united opposition.

What they want to do is gesture towards reversing it, but fail. Then they can blame activist courts, the liberal media and secular society -- and keep the grassroots donations and votes rolling in indefinitely.

Exactly. The Republicans controlled all 3 branches of the U.S. government for the past 6 years, and the Religious Right controlled the Republicans. If they'd truly wanted to criminalize abortion, they'd have done so by now.

Cheers,

Michael

Welcome to our world.

If there is an opportunity for profit, a Repugnantcan will see it and take advantage of it.

They've learned that the best opportunity for unbridled profits is in the despair and outrage of others. Consequently, they've made sure that the despair and outrage continues unabated.

Such is "compassionate conservatism".

As much as I hate to say this; I will. I would not blame conservatism for such shameless political exploitation. The reason they do it has to do with greed and the unending lust for power that they have. I would not be surprised if half the people behind this movement would eagerly switch sides so long as their lust for both was slaked by the masses.

I blame "compassionate conservatism", as postulated by our current president during his first presidential campaign. The conservatism that disenfranchises, or attempts to disenfranchise, anyone who doesn't fit neatly into their narrow little world. I think you may be confusing "blame the victim" for "exalt the victim", the latter being "compassionate conservatives" behaving like "bleeding heart liberals" to get access to transfer payments ostensibly made to those in need of help, the "victims".
