Default Memorial Day

I just noticed that it's Memorial Day in the US and the UK (I think).

Memorial Day

And yes, I know it's a cheap appeal to emotions, but there you go.

It's Memorial Day, people. A day off school/work, pools open for the summer and nationwide bbqs. Enough with the buzzkilling stories of dead soldiers.

On Memorial Day I like to remember my dad. He served in the US Navy in his younger days. He served on an aircraft carrier just after WWII. He died twelve years ago.

I also think of my uncle. He too was in the Navy, during the Vietnam years, and died in his forties from that Agent Orange-related leukemia.

Heaven knows what unseen maladies the soldiers fighting our current war are bringing back with them, not to mention the visible wounds. God bless them all. I hope whoever wins the presidential election has enough sense to work toward a resolution and get them out of this quagmire.

I saw a Budweiser ad yesterday that almost moved me to tears - it was the one set in an airport where people waiting in the gate area spontaneously applaud the solders getting off the plane. It was so fitting.

Ah, yes...The memorial to the onset of summer. Barbeques, picnics, badminton, boating, sunburns...that kind of stuff.

But, hey, this is Puddle City and we're busy this weekend refilling the puddles. It's mucky yucky out there. Even Emma is sitting, under cover, on the shed porch, watching it rain.

I wish it would rain here. I've been pulling weeds and trimming bushes; it's muggy as hell out there. If it does rain--as they're predicting--I'm standing out there in it until I'm good and soaked.

Maybe if I washed my car ...

I worked today as well. This morning anyway. The usual formalities at the annual Memorial Day service hosted by the local American Legion post. Invocation & Benediction during the service in the town hall, prayers at the river (the laying of a wreath in honor of those who lost their lives at sea) and prayers at a couple of cemetaries. I also have to work this evening. Not Memorial Day related though. I have a funeral visitation to conduct at the funeral home.

No rest for the wicked weary.

We visited six cemeteries this weekend to plant flowers at the graves of relatives and ancestors. These people included veterans of the American Revolution, Civil War, Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, and Vietnam. We also, attended two cook outs during this three day weekend.

Well, the mall was packed. Our store was very busy, and I got into an argument with a guy about shoes and Israel (don't ask unless you really want to know), and I was happy to see my Korean War Veteran guy customer come in and to be able to say "I'm glad we're not memorialising you today. He laughed, which is the best thing about it all.

I also called my dad (Viet Nam Vet) and made sure his house had not got knocked over in the Iowa tornado (he's fine, which is the best best thing).

I dug a firepit in my backyard, pausing every few minutes to express my opinion of Indiana soil with an eloquently phrased "Fuck glaciers!", and the occasional promise to idle the Jeep all night just to put a little more CO2 into the air in order to kill off the descendants of the fuckers that dropped a metric shit ton of stones in my backyard during the last ice age.

So, what I mean to say is, I didn't actually memorialize anything, and I'm jealous of ES because she was drunk and I was tired and sweaty and covered in mosquito bites.

I am going to attempt to assemble it today after work. It's exactly the dimensions I wanted, which is why I bought it, but it's totally the wrong color (cherry instead of white). We're going to see tonight if I like how it looks regardless of the color. None of this has anything to do with Memorial Day, so please do not read this post.

That's what happens when you go shopping while you're passed out.

I haven't laughed this hard in quite a while. It was a STRAIN I tell yah, to keep from LOL'in out loud and rouse the suspicions of my nosey neighbors in the cubicles next to me.

Friday's are a half-day at work here for me, so I cut out at 11,,,yeah,,yeah,,I know....went and picked up my two boys and we headed out for the mountains. Invited my daughter and wife, but they preferred to stay indoors on their computers.

Went on an overnight hiking/camping trip at a local state park, took pictures (to be posted later), fished, grilled out, then came back Sunday afternoon.

I WOULD have gotten drunk and passed out on my brother's bed, but had to be a responsible parent yah know. Spent the rest of the day killing N00b hordies on wow with my boys and then Monday, we went to see the new Indiana Jones movie... MOST EXCELLENT!

I remembered I was out of dishwasher detergent, so I went to Target, where I also picked up some dark chocolate M&M's. Then I watched more Babylon 5 and remembered it was Memorial Day.

Does that count?
