And don't forget The Birthday Party!
Nick Cave is great. His music has a dark literary quality to it, like the works of Poe, and historical legends of passion, murder and madness. My flatmate hates him. I love him.

I only know Nick Cave via ]V[etallica's cover of Loverman. That song kind of creeped me out until I really listened to it, then it wasn't so bad.

Re: The Nick Cave Appreciation thread, detractors well be skull fucked to death
Some of his best stuff was already posted on the Lyrics thread:
The Mercy Seat
The Hammer Song
I Had a Dream Joe
would definitely be among my favourites.
Nick Cave may be a little too dark for some people's taste but he's an incredible musician and lyricist if you're inclined towards that sort of thing.
While we're at it I have to recommend the book he wrote, "And the Ass saw the Angel" again to anyone who didn't see the last recommendation. Its about the mentally challenged offspring of two alcoholic hillbillies who lives in the swamps outside of a small town and basically thinks he's on a mission from God. The townsfolk are all members of a Calvinistic religious cult started by the same guy who founded the town. Its a dark and poetic novel, beautifully written.

Re: The Nick Cave Appreciation thread, detractors well be skull fucked to death
if you like dark and destructive songs, or perhaps a cheeky little tune about a 15 year old psycho named lotty then check out murder ballads,
I let love in is an excellent cd as well.
actually nick has a bunch of good songs, hell he has about 14-15 cds out.
my little boat is empty is a kickass song.

I've barely heard Nick Cave, but what I've heard I really liked. A song on our college radio station--dammit, don't remember the title--and his song on the Zero Effect soundtrack (didn't know that was him till liv told me). And there's Bongwater's passing tribute to him on The Power of Pussy.

I thought Nick Cave was a pulp novel detective. "That's right sweetheart, the names Cave, Nick Cave."

Re: The Nick Cave Appreciation thread, detractors well be skull fucked to death
YAY Good to see some good taste, not that anyone has bad taste, but my kinda taste....you confused, i am.
I love Nick Cave, probably top of my list of singer/songwriters.
Seen him live 4 times now. He is amazing live so much energy and power. Twice i've been right up the front in the pit, close enough to touch. He comes right to the front of the stage and sings to people, pionting dancing and making eye contact.
Wish he would move back to Australia (good Melbourne boy) so he would tour more often.
Saw him 2 weeks ago at the Opera House in "Came So Far From Beauty" a Leonard Cohen tribute ( Second on my list or maybe equal first).
He has his hair short now looks almost respectable.
Top songs
The Ship Song
The Weeping Song
The Carney
The Mercy Seat
Into My Arms
ahhh too many...

I live in georgia.
I have decided that if he makes it within 300 miles of my location, I will see him in concert. I hope to see him one day. Into my arms is a great song btw, where else are you going to hear the lyrics: I dont believe in an interventionist god, baby, I know that you do?

Re: The Nick Cave Appreciation thread, detractors well be skull fucked to death
I highly recommend seeing him. He is the live best performer i've seen.
How did you get into him? Didn't know if he was well known in the States or not.
I love the way he makes words fit as opposed to finding words that fit.
In "Hallelujah" on "No More Shall We Part"
he sings this line in one breath and it sounds really good. I can barely say it in one breath.
"But I knew if my nurse had been here
She would never in a thousand years
Permit me to accept that invitation"
He is a god

Re: The Nick Cave Appreciation thread, detractors well be skull fucked to death
Damn, Europe gets all the quality shows. I'd give my molars to see Nick Cave live.
But yes, as Beyelzu has stated completely accurately, Nick Cave is the best thing to happen to music since music was created. I'm afraid I may not be giving him quite enough credit, there.
My favorite of his albums is Tender Prey, the one in my avatar. Mercy, a track from said album, is also my favorite song of all time. Other favorites include:
Wild World
From Her to Eternity
Tupelo
Muddy Water
Black Betty
The Carny
The Mercy Seat
Up Jumped The Devil
The Good Son
The Weeping Song
Papa Won't Leave You, Henry
I Had A Dream, Joe
Straight To You
Brother, My Cup Is Empty
John Finns' Wife
Do You Love Me?
I Let Love In
Do You Love Me? - Part 2
Henry Lee
Where The Wild Roses Grow (with Kylie Minogue)
The Curse Of Millhaven
Into My Arms
Lime Tree Arbour
People Ain't No Good
Brompton Oratory
And many, many others. I've also read one of his biographies and his novel And the Ass Saw the Angel. I saw the film Ghosts of the Civil Dead, in which he stars as a psychopath named Maynard, and will more than likely get some sort of Nick Cave related tattoo at some point. I really like Nick Cave. Incidentally, there's a brand new 3 disc box set of his b-sides and outtakes that has just been made available, and you can find it for around $20. It's a really fantastic starting point, and a rather incredible value. But I'll go ahead and shut up for now.
Will

Re: The Nick Cave Appreciation thread, detractors well be skull fucked to death
There's nothing like Nick Cave live. He has a stage presence somewhere between a carnie huckster and a baptist minister. The first live show I ever saw was Nick Cave. I got high on caffiene pills and drunk with a fake ID (I was 13) both of which added considerably to the thrill. Nevertheless, I would still be eager to see Nick Cave live again (sans the stimulant/depressant cocktail).
Warning! Listening to the Mercy Seat on psycho-active drugs can cause insanity. It's one of my favorite Nick Cave songs, though it's not exactly typical.

Re: The Nick Cave Appreciation thread, detractors well be skull fucked to death
Hey!
I forgot to wander over here to thank beyelzu for the samples (provided about an aeon or so ago in chatroom)! I had never even heard of Nick Cave and enjoyed the 3-4 songs enough to purchase a 2 disc thingie of his from Amazon.com (B-side something or another...)
The mix of what seemed to me gospel, country, gothy, rocky and his incredible voice is intriguing. I liked the more ballady songs of the ones I downloaded. I confess that I've been as a slug on a salt lick because I got the CD package, but haven't even opened it yet.
Thanks again, beyelzu!
