Disapprove Five Things Not Improved by Bacon

I didn't want to buzzkill the Bacon Salt thread so here's a new one for bacon trend skeptics. This guy covers some of the bases: Five Things Not Improved By Bacon. The bacon in dessert thing is particularly appalling to me, and I didn't even know some people crumbled bacon into sweet breakfast cereal. That's perverse.

I don't hate bacon as much as I used to -- I put it in certain things for that smokey crunch -- but I will never understand any use of bacon that involves wetting it or soaking it or in any other way de-crisping it. Might as well just eat that fatty slime raw. :shudder:

I'm glad someone agrees with me about bacon infused vodka. I like vodka, I like that it doesn't taste like anything, but alcohol. I can tolerate some vodka infusions, but bacon grosses me out.

Especially when there's a rasher hanging in the cocktail like it's an olive.

 Yes, that's appealing.

I also tried one variety of bacon/chocolate. Milk chocolate and bacon isn't so great. Salted caramels and chocolate are delicious, bacon would be ok with that, but almonds are the bomb.

I like bacon. I'm not ashamed of that. But I'm considering joining the bacon backlash. There is such a thing as too much bacon.

That was my opinion of the milk chocolate Vosges bar as well. It was more weird than appetizing.

But I feel like dark chocolate may work better...

I still haven't worked up the nerve to try chocolate covered bacon - it could be good, but it just seems wrong to me.

This thread only goes to prove the true awesomeness of bacon :pleased:

The author couldn't even find 5 things that bacon doesn't improve! Sure he has alcohol, cereal and sweets, but then he flails and can't find any more :P

Yes, pork fat is a huge boon to a cook, and yes, Emeril's particular collision of cultures (Portuguese and Creole) both make huge use of the bounty of the pig, but every time he gets his audience to shout, "PORK FAT RULES!" I want to slug my television with a baseball bat. Whatever you think of his media mini-empire, the guy is a great cook. He doesn't need the Porcine Cult of Personality thing, and it grates.
What exactly is it that bacon does not improve? Um, Emeril? :unwhat: No worries, I don't plan on eating Emeril and even if I did, I have no doubt wrapping him in bacon would only improve the flavour.

Oh, I wish this were a joke. It certainly seems to have started out that way, but then I started hearing about "bacon-potato pancakes". An Irish restaurant started with "bacon boxty", and suddenly it was everywhere. It's not that bacon and potato pancakes don't go together; it's that calling them "bacon latkes" is supposed to be ironic and instead just ends up sounding stupid and insulting. Oy, Gottenyu!
So his real problem is that a jewish food shouldn't have bacon in it? He even admits that bacon does go with potato pancakes (well d'uh! of course it does!).

Case closed, QED, bacon is teh awesomeness :w00t:

Bacon vodka is way disgusting enough to justify 3 points in itself :projectilevomit:

Amen!

I like bacon crispy and salty and, unlike say, pretzels, chocolate doesn't improve upon the saltiness.

I never even understood having pig with pancakes. Have one or t'other but not together.

Vremya, you want the pravda? The pravda is that you don't have to work up the nerve to try this. I did it for you and it was AWFUL. :bleh: :yuck:

:ohnoes:

Sopping up left over syrup is the purpose of the sausage! (And any biscuits get final clean up duty where you can relive the whole breakfast experience in a couple of bites!)

Hold on to your tectonic plate because I no likee bacon. I tolerate it, and in some very specific recipes, I appreciate the crisp smokiness it brings. I will never just cook up some rashers and nom them, however, on account of it I don't like bacon. Sorreh. :comfort:

I don't mind little breakfast links on the side, but the whole maple syrup-pancake-pig trifecta does not work for me.

liv, your aversion to sweet plus savory in general makes me not trust your opinion on this matter. I'm sorry. Bacon dessert is a lovely, lovely thing in theory, and in practice it hits the mark at least half the time.

I definitely want to try bacon infused vodka, although the pic in the article is an appalling example of food photography.

I bought a coworker the bacon belt for Library Week. She was thrilled.
