Is Pat Robertson losing his mind?
The same Pat Robertson that ranted back in 2003 about Bush having the gall to ask a leader of a sovereign nation to step down...
Quote:
“How dare the president of the United States say to the duly elected president of another country, 'You've got to step down,'"

... is now advocating the assassination of Hugo Chavez.
Quote:
``We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability,''

He lost it a long time ago, if he ever had it
''It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop.'' Kill them, and take their oil. It's what Jesus commands.
In October 2003, he suggested that the State Department be blown up with a nuclear device. He has also said that feminism encourages women to ''kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.'' Just not necessarily in that order.

It comes with following a “holy” book that is filled to the brim with a wealth of contradiction. You can take a situation and apply one thing one time and another thing another time. Turn the other cheek and vengeance is mine are all part of the same guidelines.

Fox News is carrying the original AP story which has expanded quotes. So far no comment from Robertson's people. I get a feeling he's going to have to eat these words too, probably with his standard half-assed non-apology.

When is Pat Robertson not losing his mind?
Scarlatti, that reminds me of a bumpersticker,
"Sorry I missed church I've been busy practicing witchcraft and becoming a lesbian."

Does one have to practice at lesbianism? I kinda figured it was one of those "riding a bicycle" things.

Of course. That's the whole point. This distracts attention from Cindy Sheehan/Karl Rove/Iraq. The conservative media is fucking delighted that this is a big story. It doesn't cost them any points at all. Wow, news flash, Pat Robertson is a looney, who gives a fuck. Pat's groupies will continue to accept him as a messiah (and send him checks), and everyone else will continue to talk about just how crazy he is.
What the media AREN'T talking about is what matters. Robertson is just another errand boy for the right. He does what he's told - just like Ann Coulter and the other hysterics. Their shrill lunacy makes Bush look like a moderate in comparison. An added political bonus. The crazier you're willing to be on national TV, the more valuable asset you are to the right.

I agree with Chuck here. It's a diversion. Watch for what's NOT being reported or hyped.

Re: Is Pat Robertson losing his mind?
Really should be astonishing that a major US religious leader, an open Bush enthusiast, would condone murdering a foreign leader. But this is not at all out of the mainstream of conservatism and fundamentalist Christianity. Robertson states repeatedly that the commission of one sin is equal to committing any other; Homosexuality will send you straight to Hell, while murdering foreign leaders, 'insurgents', and prisoners is OK. How far right are we gonna end up going!!

If Robertson is such a looney, why does the MSMedia keep consulting him? Is it for the entertainment value?

Because he makes the administration look moderate and well-reasoned by comparison.

Re: Is Pat Robertson losing his mind?
Rich right wing douchebags will be rich right wing douchebags. Given Robertson's extensive history with this sort of thing, it's hard to imagine being surprised by anything that drops from his odious and malevolent maw.
What frosts my nuts about this story -- and Lisa is REALLY honked off about this, so heads-up -- is how the "liberal media" is letting Robertson and other right wing nutburgers get away with calling Chavez a "strongarm man", a "dicator" and a "military dictator." Almost makes you want to see lying criminalized. So far as I can tell, Chavez's great transgressions are refusing to let private oil companies plunder his nation and telling some rather ugly truths about the Bush administration.

I was less than impressed by the White House calling the comments "inappropriate". That's not exactly the disavowal I was looking for, although it's pretty close to the one I expected.

Re: Is Pat Robertson losing his mind?
He lost his mind long ago.
And he lost his credibility as a Republican on 9-11 when he publically agreed with Falwell that the attack was God's punishment.
OK, he apologized. But later he suggested "nuking" the State Department.
Now this.
But the full measure of his thorough scoundrelism isn't his politics, it's that he made his fortune bilking the sick.
Don't picture a typical Robertson follower as some ill natured Eric Rudolph type. Picture a poor sick old lady who handed over a chunk of cash after being "healed".
That does more damage to the world than his politics. The only political clout he has is local, and that's just because he's rich, not his ideas.

Re: Is Pat Robertson losing his mind?
Well, Chavez did serve time in prison for an attempted coup a half dozen years before he won popular election by the Venezuelan people. Right wingers hate populist leaders, hate them, hate them, hate them. In all subsequent elections he has been reelected, survived several coup attempts and for all I know several assassination attempts. Chavez has befriended Casto, which pisses them off even more. Hard for an embargo to have much effect when the producer of a large chunk of petroleum shows willingness to trade with your "enemy."
My old sickly grandmother gave tens of thousands of dollars in her declining years to Pat Robertson, Oral Roberts, Rex Humbard and others of that ilk. It irks me to no end when I think about it. Well, that and the $15K she gave to Oliver North's defense fund.

ORU is a university with his name on it here in Tulsa. In fact, I can see the top of one of the buildings on campus from my house out in the country.

Re: Is Pat Robertson losing his mind?
Yes, indeedy. Oral is kind of a joke around here. His son Richard Roberts runs the evangelical ministry now. He's about as big a joke.
Some things our beloved Oral has said orally:
When asked why he flew on a Lear jet and had a custom Cadillac limousine, he said "I don't think God would want Oral Roberts to fly coach and drive a Chevrolet." I heard this one myself on a local television news broadcast.
In 1977, Oral Roberts said a 900 foot tall Jesus appeared to him and told him to build his City of Faith hospital.
In 1983, Oral Roberts said Jesus appeared to him in person and commissioned him to find a cure for cancer. To date, no cure.
In January of 1987, Oral Roberts said God was going to kill him if he didn't raise $8 million by March. He supposedly failed to meet that goal by some $4.5 million or so. In April, he announced that he had raised $9.1 million, $1.1 million more than needed, including $1.3 million from horse racetrack owner Jerry Collins. November 1987, City of Faith medical clinic closed due to lack of funds. In 1989, the City of Faith hospital and the ORU medical school were closed and sold to pay off debts in order to keep his brainwashing facility... er, religious "university" in operation.
