Default We have some gas. And can go to Mississippi

I just finished reading this article stating that Mississippians are being ignored due to the resources being concentrated in New Orleans.

We got some gas into town, and are willing to drive a van full of water and food down if we can find some back way. Does anyone want to help us do that? Shit, they have so much water overstocked here they're selling it at Office Depot for 2.00/case.

It's 106 miles to Gulfport, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses. Hit it!

What were you looking for, LadyShea? If I was close by, I'd at least convoy with you.

Thjey keep telling us if we go we won't get back because of the gas. The authorities keep saying "don't go, we'll get there". I don't know what to do. This is so frustrating.

What I saw at the shelter does not make me confident that anything useful is being done. Even the Red Cross didn't have a clue what was going on.

I don't know what you can do. The state is crying out for help. Call Red Cross. Call Habitat for Humanity. Call for your local representatives to pressure the pharmaceutical companies to get free medicines down there. Call Red Cross.

Rotting processed chickens and rotting shrimp in Gulfport are a major disease threat now. Lobby your reps to get some help down there to clean it up.

luna, the Red Cross has no idea what the hell they are doing, are overwhelemed, or their normal organization has broken down because they've been forced to work with "faith based" relief by FEMA. When we called them they had no idea where to send us or what we could do. They had a list of nearby shelters that was completely incorrect and sent us running off to an empty, locked church. Finally they said "We don't know. Send money". We found the shelter on our own. I thought I would find order....I found chaos.

I was handed a baby and she was siezing in my arms...nobody at the shelter knew who the mother was, and hadn't seen this baby before. There was no ID on children, they were running wild and the parents no where to be found. Not one item at that shelter was bought with the millions they have collected...every stitch of clothing, bar of soap, and morsel of food was donated by locals like me and sorted/distributed through Catholic charities. I had to give them a fax machine because they didn't have one. My dad was calling Office Depot to try to get a copier for health questionaires and was told "We donated a million dollars to Red Cross already"...the shelter didn't have copiers or phones or any basic equipment.

People were sleeping on donated matteresses and getting lice....they should be on sanitary cots. Where are the cots? What is the money being spent on?

Oh, god.

This is unbelievable. I'm.... speechless. :(

What the hell can be done? Where the fuck are the leaders? Why aren't they leading? I'm utterly stunned. Jesus.

The Red Cross was there. The National Guard was there. Catholic Charities was there the first day, then didn't show up yesterday and they were in charge of the donated supplies closet. So when a lady asked for a pillow we couldn't get her one.

And no, nobody was leading. There were two epople I were told were the "shelter managers" and they wouldn't speak to us.
