Texas Pastor Electrocuted During Baptism
WACO, Texas - A pastor performing a baptism was electrocuted inside his church Sunday morning after grabbing a microphone while partially submerged, a church employee said.
The Rev. Kyle Lake, 33, was standing in water up to his shoulder in a baptismal at University Baptist Church when he was electrocuted, said Jamie Dudley, a church business administrator and wife of another pastor there.
Doctors in the congregation performed chest compressions, she said. Lake was taken by ambulance to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, where nursing supervisor Pat Mahl said he was pronounced dead.
The woman Lake was baptizing was not injured, Dudley said.
Pastors at University Baptist Church routinely use a microphone during baptisms, Dudley said.
"He was grabbing the microphone so everyone could hear," Dudley said. "It's the only way you can be loud enough."
About 800 people attended the morning service, which was larger than normal because it was homecoming weekend at nearby Baylor University, Dudley said.
Lake, who had a wife and three children, had been at the church for nine years, the last seven as pastor, Dudley said.

Re: Texas Pastor Electrocuted During Baptism
In the Southern Baptist church of my youth, where I was baptized, there was a microphone on a stand in the front of the baptismal, but not in it.

Re: Texas Pastor Electrocuted During Baptism
A southern baptist would say that. Then again, so would us catholics, so, I guess, yes ... Satan walks among us and he's boiling pastors (want fries with that?)

Re: Texas Pastor Electrocuted During Baptism
Actually, is there any biblical support for Satan having any ability to kill?

No idea, but let's just say he was working in the hearts of minds of the health & safety officers at the church. He gets around.

Oh, my god, the baptismal font was in revolt and made an example of the minister.

Re: Texas Pastor Electrocuted During Baptism
Generating much controversy, the church transformers will be taking this to the wire before the church announced their new leader. I'm sure the responsibility they are charged with is heavy, but they'll turn this negative into a positive.

A battery of tests will be conducted to shed some illumination on this case.

Re: Texas Pastor Electrocuted During Baptism
I noticed this story posted at another forum I frequent so I went to join in the the fun - but there was no fun, just posts like this
Such a tragic accident!! Prayers for his family, friends, and congregation. He is with his Father now, may he rest in peace.
This is awful. I just read this and then my husband came home from taking the kids to school and he said he heard it on the radio. God be with this young man's family. He looks like such a sweet man. Just so tragic
Meanwhile I am  --->

Poor sod . I don't mean to sound all po-faced and humourless but there ARE three young children who have just lost a father.

Yeah, I don't mind gallows humor either, but you're right. There are not only the kids, but also his wife, his other relatives, his friends, his co-workers, the 800 people who witnessed the horror, the rest of the church congregation, the community at large, and the doctors, nurses, and staff who tried to revive him who experienced a lot of pain and grief.
Never mind that this was in a church. That sort of thing is horrifying to witness.

Re: Texas Pastor Electrocuted During Baptism
My mom got me an electric shaver for my legs when I was 14 or so. For some reason which to this day escapes me, I had it in head that my legs should be wet before shaving so even though I knew full well that electricity + water = bad, I plugged it in, got into the tub, extended my leg and was about an inch away from contact when my mom walked in the door and unplugged the thing. She had heard the noise and raced up in the proverbial nick of time.
I waxed my legs from then on.
