Back to School 2 - Electric Boogaloo
It has been almost a year and a half since I announced (in the Back to School thread) that I had enrolled in the University of Phoenix online. I should be taking the last block of classes for that degree now, but unfortunately the program they put together for me only results in 59 credits, and 60 credits are necessary for the degree. So now I have apply and register at a local community college and find one single credit, transferable course or spend another $1,000 and 9 more weeks taking another 3 credit course at UoP.
On a different note, I have decided to keep taking classes at least until I get a BA in Computer Science. However I'm going to trade in the convenience of online classes for the structure and social components of a brick and mortar school. To that end I have applied to Texas State University and will start taking classes at the Round Rock Higher Education Center in January. I'm hoping it'll be fun.
So now I'm a little confused about how to handle that missing credit. Do I still have to sign up for a single credit course at the community college, or can I just transfer one of the credits I earn at TSU over to UoP to finish it up? I will probably ask an academic advisor, but free advice here works too.

Typically, any credit that is earned at an acredited school is accepted for transfer. However, they decide how it will transfer. I took some more advanced classes at community college that later only counted as intro courses at Uni. But as you are looking for any credit that shouldn't matter. It is always best to check though.

Re: Back to School 2 - Electric Boogaloo
Thanks Demi. I'm pretty clear on that part, I'm just trying to figure out the easiest way to get the associates degree so I have some piece of paper in case I don't finish the BA. Like if all my UoP credits are transferable to TSU, can I just get one more TSU credit and thus an associates from TSU? Or do I have to get it from UoP?

Does TSU offer an associates degree?

Typically in order to get a degree from a college or university they have a minimum number of hours that you can transfer. I could only transfer sixty from CC for my degree at UTA. It differs with the insitution. Some only allow forty.
Now you may be able to get one credit from TSU and transfer it to UofP, and get your associates from UofP.

Is it possible to get credit for the work you do or have done in the past?

I did not know about RRHEC.
Is there some reason not to just pick up the credit by online education, and forestall any accounting problems (which could occur in both directions) between UP and TSU?

Re: Back to School 2 - Electric Boogaloo
The only problems are that my loans are used up and UP only offers 3 credit courses, so I'd have to pay the price of a full class (~$1200) out of pocket and end up with two more credits than I need. I guess that's not such a bad thing though, if I can transfer the credits.

Re: Back to School 2 - Electric Boogaloo
How exactly did you get a total of 59 if every class is worth 3?

Re: Back to School 2 - Electric Boogaloo
Actually I had a handful of credits from classes I took years ago and a few for Army training when I signed up at UP.

Re: Back to School 2 - Electric Boogaloo
If those credits transfered, I would imagine that UofP would accept others. Why couldn't you take yoga or golf or something at a CC for a couple hundred out of pocket and then transfer that to UofP? I still have to take and transfer a math from CC to UTA,

Re: Back to School 2 - Electric Boogaloo
Ja, that's what I'll probably end up doing, it's just a bit of a pain to register at another school for just one credit.

My brother works at UoP and probably knows the answer to this type of question. I just sent him an e-mail with your OP question.
And, of course, enough of your personal information to enable identity theft.

Re: Back to School 2 - Electric Boogaloo
I took single classes at a CC, and it was so not a PITA simply because I paid out of pocket and didn't need any financial aid or degree counseling or anything. Pay the money take the class..done.

Re: Back to School 2 - Electric Boogaloo
Here's SockBro's answer:
Quote:
Because he mentions the 60 unit total, plus transfer to another school, it sounds as though he is in his associate’s program. I do not know why he would be short one unit, unless that unit happened to be a general education/elective requirement. He also mentions a nine-week course duration, as opposed to five weeks, which leads me to believe he is a student of Axia College, a college under the University of Phoenix umbrella.
He should do the following:
Ask his academic advisor exactly what unit this one unit deficiency is in (one of the general education areas? If so, which one?)
Ask about a one-unit directed study. If available, this type of course would be available through University of Phoenix which might require a formal application to University of Phoenix (if he is a student of Axia).
Failing those options, ask his advisor if he can take a Clep or a Dantes test to satisfy the requirement, and if so, which ones he could choose from based upon the category of education his outstanding unit belongs to.
Last, but not least, double-check his transferred coursework (if any) that has applied to his associate’s degree. If he has ever taken a college course anywhere, and received a C- or better, and it was college-level, it might apply to the area he needs to cover.

Doesn't quite cover the question re: State College credit, but there it is. Sumpin'.
