New Process for Video Embedding

There's a new feature in town, and it's called Automatic Media Embedding.

If you like to embed videos in your posts, you're probably familiar with the 'youtube' and 'gvideo' tags. Well we've got a better alternative now. It's not as flexible as the previous tags in that you can't automatically insert your own title, but it's easier and it uses the forum software more efficiently, which benefits everyone.

Here's how it works:

• Find the URL of the video you want to embed
• Paste it into your post

That's it! The new AME add-on will automatically convert the URL to an embedded video.

This will currently work with videos from the following services:

• Google Video
• YouTube
• Metacafe
• iFilm
• Putfile
• MySpace

It's easy to add others, too. So if you have another favorite source for videos let us know.

If AME finds a title for the video at the source, it'll insert it as the embedded title. If that doesn't work (or you want different text) just edit your post after you submit it and change the text to whatever you want.

We will be leaving the old bbcodes installed for backward compatibility, but please don't use them anymore.

That works with preview as well. The URL will be parsed after you click "Preview Post", so you can make any edits you wish to the title before clicking "Submit Reply".

The video embedding (at least for YouTube) is usually a bit wonky. Sometimes it works fine, other times I have to hit 'preview' several times before it shows up.

That's true. I've previewed twice to get the tags to look right so I can title the thingy whatever I want.

I edited a couple of times, each time deleting the default url tags and it worked.

I did encounter a weird today. I was posting a video and the previews didn't give me the youtube tags. Apparently the way this one was tagged at the source disabling embeding wouldn't even let me get to the rude "Embedding disabled by request." from the youtubes.
