Pat Robertson is not losing his mind. He can't lose what he never had to begin with.

No, we'd like to borrow Dubya if that's okay with you. It's sweet to watch him and Tony together. One's a Catholic and trying to pretend he isn't, and the other's a...well what IS Dubya?

Has Mr Robertson had personal experience of our poofery?

Ha ha, I love that. When I go out tonight I'm going to look for some 'powerful homosexuals'.

Nothing like a bit of racial stereotyping, is there? Going by him alone, you could say America is a land overrun by dogmatic, religious nut-jobs.

Honestly, you visit a country once and become an expert on it.

Did he actually come to Scotland, or did he visit England and think we were part of that country? (As many Americans seem to). :D

And Godless, you toss cabers here. Be sure to wear mirrored toe-caps for all those men in skirts.

He was there pursuant to his attempt to secure an interest in the Bank of Scotland several years ago, but, as noted, got rebuffed by the powerful homosexuals that overrun that dark land. What those homosexuals do in their spare time (when not overrunning their dark land) is known locally as "the Scottish pound."

You may be the first non-American I've met online who doesn't think it is. In fact by and large, even the Americans I've met online think it is. I'm fortunate that I've led such a sheltered life here. My life has been a celebration of debauchery that shouldn't be possible in this medieval land.

The caber is an obvious phallic symbol, "tossed" by men wearing dresses.

Also, how many other countries call their most famous hero "Bonnie" Prince Charlie.

Bonnie Prince Charlie was never called such by the Scots. He was called something in Gaelic that sounded like 'Bonnie' to the English-speaking tongues.

James VI, who also took the throne of England and became known as James I (for some reason regnal numbers go by the English system) - was a powerful man, who indulged in being a practicing homosexualist, so the story goes.

He took a pounding from many a man in the dark, dark, land. I've read about it, so it must be true.

My experience of Americans (ooh-err missus) seems to be that few have any idea of what goes on beyond their own borders, or indeed, what the rest of the world thinks of the US. Rest of the world? Isn't America the world itself? As for religion, well...each to their own. I have my beliefs and begrudge no-one their own choice of spiritual path.

Oh, and I must make the point that too many Americans seem to think that England is the name of this island. It isn't. It's called Britain and is comprised of Scotland, Wales and England.

The United Kingdom is Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland.

But please be aware that England is only one country in the British Isles, and Scotland is an entirely separate nation.

Here endeth the lecture on my nationality. :D

Oh, and further to my 'Bonnie' Prince Charlie post - His men actually called him Tcharlach mac Seamus - Charles, son of James. The Gaelic Tcharlach sounds a bit like the English Charlie but no-one would have dared use such an informal term to the man they believed to be the rightful king. 'Bonnie' was a term that came from legend, decades, even centuries after his death. Again, no-one would have dared call him Bonnie in his own lifetime.

I mean, that would have made them sound like powerful you-know-whats from a dark, dark land!

Thanks for this. I am indeed one of those Americans who can never keep that straight, despite the fact that I've been through England a few times.

Never, never, never never never go up to a scot, especially one in full patriotic dress and ask, "Aren't you from england?" Unless you would like some free dental surgery. I think that's right up there with, "Nice skirt, you get that from your wife?" to a Scotsman in a kilt.

Back when I was living in the East, I used to attend the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games in North Carolina each summer. One year, I was driving up to the games when I had to stop for gas. So, I got out of the car, pumped the gas, then when into the store to get a drink and pay for the gas -- all the while wearing a full kilt.

I noticed that the guy at the counter was staring at me rather openly, but he didn't say anything at first. Finally, he could hold back no longer apparently, and said, "I don't mean to be rude, but are you Amish?"

True story, I swear.

Cheers,

Michael

Hello yourself!
Slowly, alas, but my advisor should be back sometime next week, and if all goes well, we'll have the (more or less) final version completed next week and send it out to the rest of my committee for review. Figure about 2 weeks to let them look it over and make any suggestions, and then I'll defend. With luck, I'll be officially done by mid- to late-September.

At this point, I'm more than ready to be done!

Sadly, there have been a few . . . complications . . . in my life over the past couple of months, which have kept me kinda busy, so let's just say that I'm anticipating being much happier this time next year! By then, I'll hopefully have a good job and financial stability, be able to get more than a few hours' sleep a night, catch up on some long-neglected duties -- like hiking and camping, reading good books, writing, etc., etc. (Yay!)

Quote:

Considering we were literally only a few miles from Grandfather Mountain, where the Highland Games are a major event and are held every year, it was astonishing to me that he apparently hadn't seen lots of guys going around in kilts before he encountered me. (Of course, he might have just moved there from somewhere else.) Even more astonishing, of course, was that he apparently didn't know what a kilt was and what sorts of people tend to wear them.

I was kinda pleased that I managed to keep a perfectly straight face and that I neither laughed out loud nor blurted out the comment that leaped to mind about how the Amish are not known either for wearing kilts or for driving automobiles. Instead, I politely informed him that I wasn't Amish at all, that I was there for the Highland Games, and that I was wearing a "kilt" -- traditional Scottish Highlands dress. He seemed to find that information quite interesting.

It was definitely kind of a Twilight Zone moment to be sure.

Still, it's not the first time that I've walked into a store in rural North Carolina while wearing a kilt. I've gotten stares, of course, but I've never been laughed at or challenged. This has lead me to formulate Michael's Law #7: "So long as you look confident and self-assurred, few people will dare to challenge your right to do anything." (It may help, as some of my companions have pointed out, that I apparently can look sort of intimidating. I find that vastly amusing, for some reason, since I'm just-about the least aggressive person who ever lived.)

Cheers,

Michael

No, no, you only HEARD about it because of the Mel Gibson film. Scotland existed waaaaaaaaaaay before that and the rest of the world had heard of it; America needed a film to bring Scotland to its (no apostrophe) attention; I mean, it's not as if you would have looked at a map of the WORLD is it?

:giggle:

Oh, and THE FILM WAS MADE UP. Just because Hollywood shows you something, doesn't mean it's all true. They never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
