Wisconsin isn't really midwest by the broadest definition of midwest, Oklahoma is, Kansass and Nebraska are. Wisconsin was midwest by 1820 standards. We're so over that.

Baloney. I know of no modern definition of 'Midwest' that does not include Wisconsin. Oklahoma is generally considered to be a South Central state, more specifically, West South Central.

No shit, archaic. If you go back far enough, Wisconsin was known as the Far West, way out in the Northwest Territories. I've never heard one single person in Oklahoma refer to the state as being South Central. Some say it's Southwest and like to associate with the likes of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, cowboy hats and snakeskin boots and all that rigamarole. A few think of it as an extension of the Great Plains states, or the Midwest, as those there think of it. In my experience, most people in Kansas think of themselves as from the Midwest. If you look at a map of the U.S., Nebraska and Kansas are definitely middle and the archaic "Midwest" states are anything but middle or west.

The Great Lakes region is it's own entity in my book at least. I guess if you live in Connecticut everything west of Pennsylvania is Midwestern. If you're in LA everything east of Utah is Midwest. The Great Lakes states; MI, WI, OH, and IN are one group. Midwest is IA, NE, MO, IL and KS. OK and AR are southern states to this Plains boy! :mememe:

Oh no no no. I'M of inferior intellect. This Forum is the only one I've been to that has so many smart people. I'm justa high school grad. If any states had to secede I'd want TX,LA,MS,AL,SC and FL to get lost. (GA is a big city state now.) My favorite states are VT,ME, OR,WA and MA.

Ok, I think the Fuck the South thing is funny....but of course I would becaue I'm a raging liberal and I don't live in the south. I can admit I wouldn't think it was very funny if it was a diatribe against my beloved home.

So, here's what I think. We all know that piece is directed toward the people that strut around like peacocks and try to maintain all these Southern myths...the fundamentalist Southerners, if you like (since it seems popular on these various boards to throw around the word fundamentalist lately). It's certainly not directed to the kind of freethinking Southerners we know here on our board. Still, I can see why there would be a negative reaction by all southerners. But, I think that, much like I would like, and try, to reclaim the word liberal from those who are trying to turn it into a bad word, all southerners (and non-southerners) should change the meaning of the term southerner and not let those fundamentalist southerner types co-opt the word and tie you and it to bad connotations.

Of course it won't be easy, because the bad connotations with "The South" run deep with many, but I would submit that it was not the writers of Fuckthesouth.com that turned the south into a bad word. The fundamentalist southerners defined it; and they defined it that way on purpose, so people rebutting and railing against those people are simply using a definition that was provided to them. Don't let those fundamentalists get away with turning freethinkers against each other because of a little terminology!!

PS who else is as annoyed as I am by my inconsistent capitalization of the south and southerners? I just couldn't decide...
