What jobs are good for the next 2 years?
So you worked several years at a job making major bucks working 14hours a day, 7 days a week. You got laid off and Joseph Q Idiot who couldn’t manage his way out of a paper bag and showed up once a week and became CEO because Mommie and Daddie have money did too.
Mr Idiot got the multi-million dollar parachute because it was your fault he mis-managed the company because you’re a slacker who didn’t show up to work enough. To further screw you, Mr Idiot refused to give you or anyone a severance saying don’t like it, sue me, knowing that in the US if you don’t have money you don’t have legal representation.
You’ve been wronged and have suppressed your urge to make MR Idiot’s neck the same circumference as your pinkie.
You need a job to pay the bills. There are no more Jobs that fit your skill set. You’ve accepted the fact you most likely need to do a major reset back to minimum wage.
Question, (funny story above aside ) what job would survive through the economic crisis over the next few years so that you have some continous income?
Only thing I can come up with is a Grocery Store (people have to eat).

Without knowing the skill set, it's hard to suggest anything. There's a surprising diversity of things out there you can do with some skills...

Some facets of construction are available in certain areas. Roofing here in tornado alley is always in demand. People gotta have a roof.
Seriously looking for minimum wage? Well the fast food industry is still booming. They love a good recession. Discount retailers still going strong. As well as the repo business.
Medical assistance jobs don't always require advanced education. Nursing homes are still needing lots of people for example. If you have a degree, teachers still have some of the best job security, and many states offer alternative certification.
None of these are the best options, however they do come to mind.

Maybe a political sniper. There are so many politicians it would take years to kill them all but what a fun job huh.

Gummint jobs are in a boom cycle, especially down at the unemployment offices.

Re: What jobs are good for the next 2 years?
The nursing shortage is not going to end anytime soon, at least not until all the baby boomers are croaked.
There is a shortage of pharmacy workers and managers, it takes some schooling and a clean background and pays well.
People always need dental-related help- dental technician, dentist, etc.
Translators, I think, still have a strong demand for their skills, and multilingual fluency is an added bonus to any resume, especially spanish in the US.
People will continue to need plumbers.
Unless the drug war comes to an end or things really turn around in the US, law enforcement and prison work are still open, especially with a clean background or military experience.

I thought this too for a long time, and this belief justified my educational choices. I have found, however, that it was unfounded. The fact that I am multilingual hasn't helped me land a job in which I could use my skills, and I have applied for more than a few.

Re: What jobs are good for the next 2 years?
Just this morning I noticed Advance Auto Parts had a big sign out by Southwest Boulevard advertising career opportunities. I've heard auto parts stores and auto repair businesses are going strong right now because people aren't buying new cars, they're getting their old ones repaired.
For the same reason, shoe repair is having the biggest increase in business in decades.
I think one could extrapolate that to all sorts of repair jobs, from clothing to lawn equipment, will be strong for some time to come, including you computer repair geeks.

I could try to hook you up if you want. My brothers are in the document translation business. They're staying pretty busy and doing pretty well right now. They may know how you can get into it. PM me if you're interested.

Re: What jobs are good for the next 2 years?
People still need to eat as you said, and more people will be do-it-yourselfing home repairs etc. so I think places like Lowe's and Home Depot will remain in business (I just read this morning that Lowe's offers full benefits to all workers, too, even part timers if medical insurance is a concern).
People need to get to work if they have a job, but may not be able to afford new cars or expensive repairs, so used car sales and/or auto parts retailers and/or mechanics will probably be stable. People freak out in tough economic times, so security systems installation/sales, or gun shops might be just the ticket. Pawn shops might do okay.

Haven't you heard, Jim Cramer says we've hit bottom and are beginning to bounce back? Of course, this is the same Jim Cramer who was pumping AIG right before it was announced they were in deep dog shit.

The same Jim Cramer the Daily show got to admit he'd crap on a stock just so he could make more shorting it. He also admitted that ALL the TV business guys did it to make themselves rich.

Great ideas everyone!
What is hard for a lot of people is swallowing your pride and taking that carreer giant step backwards because there are no jobs at your skill level or worse, industry your skill set matches.

Well, seems to me that putting food on the table and a roof over your head(s) should be the top priority.
I never understood people that would put their unemployed noises up at McJobs or whatever, but I have met quite a few of them.
If I have to shovel horse shit to make a living, I'll shovel horse shit...and be the best damned shit shoveler in the stable too.

Anything to do with crime and punishment is in a boom. My sis is a probation officer and she has never been so busy. As she says, she's in a growth industry.
Cops have job security, as do security firms.
And then there's the repo man, I guess. He'd be pretty busy, too, I'd say.

Nursing, until the baby boomers croak.
Medical translation, I would think. I know when I worked for Pennsylvania Medicaid, they were short on Russian medical/insurance translators and they paid more than my job.The quality of translation doesn't have to be very good either, I speak enough Spanish that I could correct some of the Spanish translators.

Call center jobs seem to grow on the current job market like a cursed lichen...
On a sadly all-too-related note, there seem to be no real jobs for PhDs in mathematics who don't want to teach (the thought of teaching may give one panic attacks, for example...hypothetically, of course... ).

If you can possibly avoid the call-centre, do. I've done it and it's awful.
Apparently, IT support is a growing industry at the moment, especially now people are opting to keep old computers running rather than buying new ones. Don't know if that helps at all.

Fuck this, once I get back to the states I'm going to flip the switch on my GI bill, go back to school, live in my parents' old house, and hope this shit's at least somewhat fixed by the time the "free ride" runs out.
