Franco-Japanese Tranny Cartoon Afficianados Unite!
So, we're in chat talking about the normal, healthy, lustful thoughts that completely normal and not at all deviant people always have about certain cartoon characters, and liv reveals that she has some sort of girl crush on something called a Lady Oscar. Now, at first, I thought that was some sort of aquarium fish, but liv assures me that this Lady Oscar person is actually the star of some crazy anime she watched as a child in Italy. As near as I can tell, liv is a giant nerd, because this cartoon appears to be about some sort of transexual chambermaid to Marie Antoinette who joins the National Guard to get money for college and possibly has some sort of sexual harassment suit filed against her by a local equestrian.
Liv's weird childhood aside, this is a thread about the crazy cartoons you barely remember from childhood. I'm not talking about Scooby-Doo or G.I.Joe or that crap, where you actually remember watching it, and eventually Hollywood makes a movie version and you complain that they've raped yoru childhood or whatever. I'm talking about Cities of Gold type shit, those cartoons that you remember fondly, to the degree that you remember them at all, and will never have feature films made to touch your childhood in its swimsuit area.

Re: Franco-Japanese Tranny Cartoon Afficianados Unite!
Pirates of Darkwater was awesome.
So, OK, this Lady Oscar thing actually does sound pretty cool, but liv was totally asking for it. She walks into a chat room where the level of discourse is somewhere between "HUURRRRRR...I BET LADY JAYE WAS GAY" and "DUURRRRR...I BET VELMA SCREAMS JINKIES DURING SEX" with this arty thing about crossdressing and intrigue and the French Revolution.

All right, you've convinced me. Lady Oscar is a Bastille stormin', stable boy fuckin' action hero. I like the way they went all children's cartoon tasteful by implying the hot nobility-on-commoner fuckin' with fireflies reflected on the water.
Also, OMG Danger Mouse!

Re: Franco-Japanese Tranny Cartoon Afficianados Unite!
Mighty Orbots and Thundarr the Barbarian are my old favorites.
Mighty Orbots wasn't around very long, I think they got their asses sued by Hasbro claiming it was a rip-off of Transformers (which was a total rip-off of Voltron). A number of robots defend the galaxy, each with a special ability. Their inventor can assemble them into Mighty Orbot, with himself inside. The artwork was above average and the two women robots were hot.
Thundarr the Barbarian was a mash-up of Conan and Star Wars, in a post-apocalyptic Earth setting with some D&D flavor thrown in. Alex Toth from Space Ghost and Jack Kirby (early Fantastic 4, etc.) did a lot of the art direction- all the villains are very Kirby-esque. Art was good to mediocre, and the characters silly- though I wholly approve of the future sorceress outfit stylings to be powder-blue one-piece bathing suits with yellow go-go boots. Thundarr's signature move was to hear the sounds of battle and immediately ride towards it, and without slowing tackle whomever he decided, without a moment's hesitation, was his foe.
I've got Thundarr on dvd.
I've heard Pirates of Darkwater is great - you can get copies off of one of those old cartoons to dvd websites I think.

I vaguely remember the cartoon. I did recognize that intro. Now I would probably be embarrassed if I actually sat down to watch an actual episode.

Re: Franco-Japanese Tranny Cartoon Afficianados Unite!
There used to be a Pinocchio that was Rankin-Bassesque, if not actually Rankin Bass that I have vague memories of.
Much of my weird, beloved cartoons came from watching TV Ontario. One they showed that I loved was a British cartoon called Willo the Wisp, which is one of the three things that made me buy a region free DVD player. Another favorite from was Jeremy the Bear, which was Colargol on Sunday's when TV Ontario broadcast in French. I understand it was Barnabus the Bear in Britain and my favorite actor did his voice. I would kill to get my hands on that. The third TV Ontario favorite was Barbapoppa. My best friend bought me a Barbapoppa cellophane tape dispenser one of the times his band toured Europe and I love it to bits.

Re: Franco-Japanese Tranny Cartoon Afficianados Unite!
Thundarr the Barbarian rawked. "Man's civilization is cast in ruin!" YES! YES! (Okay, so I was a little past the target-audience age and probably liked that bit more than would have been considered healthy.)
I recall a superhero spoof cartoon that Hanna-Barbera did called Dyno-Mutt (The Dog Wonder). He was a robot dog somewhat like Inspector Gadget (who didn't exist yet; it was a more innocent time, and our cartoons sucked, but didn't suck as bad as Inspector Gadget). He was the star of the show, although ostensibly he was sidekick to a Batman knockoff called The Blue Falcon, a guy who took his Falcon theme so seriously that he became helpless when caught in a net. It played during one of many, many repackagings of Scooby-Doo reruns.
