Default Slow-Churned Ice Cream ~ Blessing or Curse?

Since it's been so hot I've been enjoying the life-sustaining miracle of so-called Slow/Double Churned Light ice creams. My obsession last week was the Safeway brand Mocha Almond Fudge flavor. Prior favs include Butter Pecan and Mint Chocolate Chip.

I've been looking at the calories/fat calories per serving and ignoring the fact that they contain loads of partially hydrogenated soybean (and other) oils plus mono and diglycerides and other mysterious ingredients.

The only store boughten ice cream I'll eat anymore is Haagen Dazs, because it's the only one I can find that doesn't have not-food in it.

But those bastards just shrunk their 'pints,' so I'm not even eating that much anymore.

I really should just start making it myself. It's really not that hard, but you do have to get the stuff for it. So I dunno.

If only you had come to the garage sale I had about 12 years ago, you could have got my NEVER USED ice cream maker for about $5.

I got one of these bad boys for camping. Nothing like having ice cold ice cream on a hot evening in the camp ground. It does get really cold though, and wouldn't be too practical unless you have easily amused children to occupy. We just tossed it around the circle, shaking as we went. Hot summer desperation was motivation enought for us. But in AC I don't know that I would have the patience.

Get the Mega though if you want more than a pint.

Milkshake....Baskin Robbins....World Class Chocolate.

Way too much of everything, but it tastes rillyrilly good on a rillyrilly hot, 105 degree day.

I bought Sou this baby just last week - Ice Cream Maker

It makes some fantastic ice cream that is better than pretty much any store bought ice cream, except maybe haagen dazs. The only ingredients were cream, milk, sugar and vanilla extract (it was vanilla of course :P).

Sou really, really wanted the kind that freezes the ice cream while it makes it, rather than the kind where you need to freeze the bowl for 24hrs prior to making the ice cream. It was much more expensive (and it's loud!), but I must say that just chucking in some ingredients and having awesome homemade ice cream 50 mins later is very cool

I'm giving it up. Going slow-churned cold turkey, as it were. I'm guessing the partially hydrogenated oils are at as bad, if not worse, than actual full calorie butterfat/cream would be. I finished up the last of the Mocha Almond Fudge last night. There's still some Double Chocolate Fudge Brownie in there, but that does not belong to me, so I will try to resist. Or maybe I'll go cold turkey in a day or two.

I am revising my earlier opinion that slow-churned low calorie "ice cream" might be anything at all like a blessing.

Safeway happened to have Haagen Dazs on sale for about half what it usually cost. I can personally attest that both Dark Chocolate and Coconut Pineapple are AWESOME!

I'll probably be sampling the Bailey's Irish Creme and Butter Pecan flavors next week.

I love ice cream. My mother buys stuff from Marks & Spenser that is to die for. So smooth!

I was recently turned on to Costco's house brand (Kirkland) of "premium vanilla ice cream." It is really, really, really rich! 2 half-gallon containers for $6.99.

They don't have other flavors, though, which is too bad, because I bet they would be delicious.
