That's not smoke, mostly, it's pulverized concrete. Oh, and a bit of asbestos and some other nasty shit.

Re: 9/11 from the Sky
I thought I had stashed away the pictures of ground zero that the Civil Air Patrol took on September 12th, but I can't find them. They're pretty amazing. It was the first non-military flight since the airspace was shut down. Here is one low-res shot: link. Here's another: linky.

Pic 4 on the NPR site looks like there's an old woman with glasses and a big hairdo in the smoke.

Without even looking at the picture, I can tell you are mistaken, erimir. If you see anything in an explosion cloud it has to have horns and a goatee.

Well, I think it indicates that the elderly are responsible.
Like Agnes Skinner, but with glasses. And facing the other direction.

You mean this image?
It's clearly a spacehopper.

Yeah, but that version of the image cuts off the top, so you can't see the beehive haircut anymore.
Spacehoppers don't have beehive haircuts, so it can't be one of those.

It has come to my attention that some of you are mistaking random smoke shapes for glasses. There are no glasses. The spacehopper is here:

Re: 9/11 from the Sky
You're almost there, just make the glasses bluish and the hair purplish, and then you've shown exactly how it looks like an old character in a cartoon style. Altho it looks perhaps more Gary Larson-ish than Simpsons-ish.

IIRC a large portion of the cloud was pulverized drywall.

Re: 9/11 from the Sky
For sheer horror, nothing will top the footage of people jumping from the towers, which was shown on network television at the time, but rarely -- if ever -- again. Also I remember, that morning, Dan Rather had a paramedic on the phone live who was watching from New Jersey yelling, "Jesus fucking Christ" over the air. I don't know if you'd call it censorship that those moments have been submerged, but those are the sights and the sounds that really bring back the events of the day.

Re: 9/11 from the Sky
I don't think they ever broadcast the footage of people jumping ever again.
This is interesting http://www.usatoday.com/news/sept11/...2-jumper_x.htm
Apparently seeing people jumping from one tower, made the people in the second tower evacuate more quickly and one firefighter died from getting hit by one.
I turned on the TV about the time the second plane hit.
I got a call from one of my friends that said, "I don't think you are flying to China tomorrow."

Re: 9/11 from the Sky
I hope I never have to see something so horrific, that day is etched permanently in my brain because I saw bodies falling. I can't imagine facing that kind of choice on how I am going to die. Those that saw it in person must have nightmares from it.
